  • ATFS Annual 2020

Maybe only stat geeks like me care, but the ATFS Annual, an essential pub since 1951, may not publish this year.
I got an email from SportsBooks that they discussing whether to publish it this year at all. Perhaps only a digital edition?
The US Annual (FAST/USATF) has been digital for a couple of years now.

I'm not down with digital-only publications!!

Just got a note from Peter Matthews that the 2020 ATFS Annual will be ready soon - from LULU.

              https://www.lulu.com/en/us/shop/pete...ct-p92j5q.html

P.S. This may be the last year of the Annual, due to declining sales . . .

Athletics 2020 is now available for purchase. Long-time publisher SportsBooks Ltd. is no longer handling the sale and distribution of the book. The Association of Track and Field Statisticians (ATFS), whose members are deeply involved in the publication’s creation, is the new publishing entity.

The book’s format has not changed from previous editions. The 580-page volume contains a complete record of the 2019 athletics season, as well as all of the informational features that have made this the most valuable published resource for athletics enthusiasts.

Athletics 2020 is available in two formats, each priced at $20 USD.

                  1. An electronic version is available by writing to [email protected]. This version is in the form of a password-protected PDF file readable on all current operating systems.

Payment can be remitted either via PayPal (to the account: [email protected]) or by cash or check, payable to ATFS and mailed to PO Box 4288, Napa, CA 94558.

Remember to include your email address on all orders, so that you can receive the file.

The equivalent price in Euros is €18.50. At this time, we are unable to process credit-card payments.

                  2. A printed version can be obtained by searching for Athletics 2020 at https://www.lulu.com

                  or at:

                  https://www.lulu.com/shop/peter-matt...ct-p92j5q.html

Complete directions for ordering and payment are contained therein. Note that Lulu will add tax (where applicable) and postage costs to the list price.

Please address any questions to [email protected].

tc, do you see a way forward to keep the book in print for future editions? If PDFs will be available, Lulu will print it - or - is the problem in compiling the data in the first place?
That will be a huge loss, if the book is no longer available in any form.

Similarly, has anyone tried approached a you-publish-it company for the FAST Annual of the last two years (digital only)?
I wonder how much that would cost if interested people banded together to keep the cost from being astronomical.

We have every intention of continuing the creation and publication of an ATFS statistical annual. Future editions will probably not include all of the features of the present volume, but the core of the publication -- results, records and lists -- will remain. Our challenge is to uncover a new group of statisticians/compilers who are capable and willing to assume the responsibility as the current generation ages gracefully.

As long as USATF continues to support the creation of the FAST Annual, it will appear every spring...although a 2021 edition may be questionable. A print-on-demand option was not available to us previously, but Lulu (or others like it) opens up a future possibility. That said, there has been remarkably little buyer interest in a print version.

                        Yay!
I'm the guy who did the FAST Annual TJ for you for two years just a couple of years ago, and I am about to retire (my real job being the reason I couldn't continue), so I guess I'm volunteering to help again (not that I could be confused with a 'new' generation). Digital-age kids could probably figure out an algorithm to mine the data and formulate it - far better than my sorry-ass tech skills.

According to the tracker, mine is in Northborough, MA, 30 miles west of Boston !!!

My new quarantine hobby is watching the delivery vehicles inch closer to my house on the tracking apps, which show a map of my neighborhood with a moving marker for the truck as it approaches.
                            Yeah, I'm pretty bored.
