Sport and World Economics (IAAF News)

MONACO - IAAF President Lamine Diack joins United Nations’ Secretary General Kofi Annan as well as leaders from World Sport, industry and politics for a Special Session on Sport at the 36th World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, opening 25 Jan 2006.

Davos organizers invited leading personalities from sports to discuss key topics with other leaders from the political and economic communities. With the global sports market (including sporting equipment and clothing) set to top US$ 200 billion in the next three years, according to recent analysis, sport is a significant global business as well as a powerful social force.

Expected discussion topics included opportunities for collaboration to strengthen the position and impact of sports on a global level, the influence of sports leaders in improving the state of the world, and future initiatives by sport to help achieve this goal.

A session for about 200 journalists was titled: “The Impact of Sport in the World” followed by “Sports and the Global Agenda in the Next Decade. Later sessions included "The Role of Sports in Development” and “Fever Pitch: Sports and Branding in Emerging Markets.”

The World Economic Forum is an independent international organization committed to improving the state of the world by engaging leaders in partnerships to shape global, regional and industry agendas.
