Wilson Kipketer's 800 meter world record splits

the amazing thing is that 23y previously john kipkurgat went thru 600m 1.4s faster !!!
i can't find what time he finished the race in ( someone please look it up ), but it is a remarkable achievement considering the actual wr is a very respectable 1'12.81 from johhny gray

TrackNewsletter lists him in 4th behind a 1:49.9, so it's likely he didn't even break 1:50!

he was a great athlete & won the '74 cg:

so kip ran the 2nd fastest 800 in history & was only 0.21s off the wr

i'd have to say that on the evidence of his cg win ( which looks on paper a clear & easy win ) & his suicidal 600m split in the other race ( which is still the 2nd fastest 600m time we've ever seen !!! ) & he still held onto a time of maybe 1'50, that this guy couda smashed the wr that day in christchurch if he'd been closely pressured ( & perhaps had a pacemaker )

that itch in my crotch is back, & tells me this was a 1'43-flat talent on that day

Despite my wise-ass answer above, yes, I saw this race and was totally blown away. It was so obvious from the very start that Kipketer was simply GOING FOR IT, and was either going to succeed big time or die big time. When 48.10 flashed up on the big board at the bell (the pacesetter, with WK right behind) a HUGE "OOOOHHHHHH" went up from the crowd, and the stadium was absolutely rocking for that entire last lap. K's pace down the last backstretch was awesome...all the other "very good" runners were flailing away far in his wake, completely out of the picture. And, of course, 2 other records were smashed that night too. All in all, not a bad evening of track and field...

I saw Steve Lee break the 8th grade pullup record at my middle school! Did 37, with swinging i might had.
