Kipchoge profiled in the NYTimes: https://www.nytimes.com/2020/10/02/s...-marathon.html

Eliud Kipchoge Emerges as the Philosopher-King of Running

He is already the greatest marathoner ever, but Kipchoge, who competes in London on Sunday, has evolved into something of a Zen master as well. Where does that come from? Look to his heritage.

4:50/4:49 first two miles, and now 14:48, low 2:03 pace with nine on the lead pace.

At 10k, Jared Ward is in 15th place with a time of 30:13.
By my math, that works out to a 2:08 or better finish time--if he runs the same pace all the way!
          He's 27 seconds behind Kipchoge!

Kipchoge has been dropped, 4 away at the 'bell'. Kitata, Geremew. Lemma and Kipchumba.

Wow, Sara Hall second (2:22:01 - 15 sec PR) and Molly Seidel 6th (2:25:13 - #9 performer US).
Wade 2:12:38 as top USA guy.

There was a leading group of 8 once the pacemakers dropped out. They didn't really start racing until the last 4 miles or so, but it was already noticeable that Kipchoge was not looking that comfortable and was drifting a little back through the pack. On the penultimate lap, I think it was mainly Kitata and Lemma pushing hard from the front and Kipchoge and 3 others were dropped, with Kipchoge eventually falling back to 8th. He admitted in an interview on the BBC that he didn't feel good for the last 15K.

I take gargantuan exception to Letsrun's characterization of Eliud's run:

2,562 days after he last lost a marathon, on a cold (low 50s) and rainy day in London, Kipchoge was dropped by the leaders during the 24th mile of the 2020 Virgin Money London Marathon and
                              finished a mediocre 8th in 2:06:49.

                                2:06 is pretty sad..
