  • Macro out of the relay

Here we go eating our young again. This is typical of the press he is getting today up here.

"But he pulled a prima donna and the only thing he deserves now is scorn."

I don't understand the entry standards for the relays. The A standard is so high for every event, yet the sprint relays always take "any 4" from Canada. If Gilbert was a team player he would have kept any disagreement to himself. He chose to run to the press. I just hate the fact that Canada chose to send more coach's and support staff/administrators than competing athletes.

You've got several beefs in there, but I'll only bitch about a couple of them.

Slagging Gilbert for not being a team player is ridiculous. Is he the coach and decision maker of the team or is it Macro? If the latter, what makes him the be-all instead of someone like Browne? As the relay coach, Gilbert is responsible for making the calls on who runs where, using his experience and expertise. Macro is the one not being the team player and spoiling things for the rest of the guys.

I don't see it as Gilbert "running to the press" as opposed to explaining in advance to the fans why we won't be seeing Macro in the relay. It's not like you or I wouldn't notice him not being there if Gilbert kept quiet.

I'd also be curious to see what list you are looking at that lists more coaches and support staff than competing athletes. The one I see on the AC site has 17 of the former and 28 of the latter. While some arguement could be made on the necessity of that number, I also note that Boswell is quoted as going on about the several therapists working on his ankle until the wee hours of the morning before he went out and won a bronze. Guess it would have been preferable he just sucked it up and dealt with the injury on his own.

I just went and read the article from the link you provided. I was already aware of the situation. I live in Toronto, so I'm "up here" too. And I completely agree he's being a selfish asshole and letting down his team and his country. Who the hell does he think he is? I was a big Macro fan but to hell with that. I couldn't care less what he does anymore.

You beat me to the punch. I was thinking the same thing when they were interviewing Boswell. I went over each of the 17 a few days ago and couldn't really figure out who to cut. The issue is really the small size of the team.
