So Sheffield is more a politician than a city because it can be all things to all people! The south of the north or the north of the middle, or "over there somewhere" for Californians.

Can we settle on "Sheffield, located in the 19th century industrial heartland of England" for a more apposite link to the emergence of pro running?

Whilst it is very much in "the south of the North", it's in Yorkshire so it's The North! Sheffielders have never called themselves Midlanders!

The North Midlands is not a term in use these days. It's either East Midlands or West Midlands.

I realise that everything is a southern (London) conspiracy these days, but what do the Scots say about your position on the isle of Great Britain? Northern?
      Sassenachs!

Please realize this is in jest, but my only reaction to all this is, all these divisions and terms for a place so small

Definitely...have friends in Sheffield....would be appalled at being classified as the 'Midlands'....

Otoh Nottingham is in the Midlands...

Definitely....you don't have to go far to get a change in dialect.

In 1992, I spent a long weekend in Newcastle to watch 2 track and field meets at Gateshead. I took a trip to the coast on the Metro light-rail and there were some people in my carriage who had the strongest and most inpenetrable Geordie accents I had ever heard. That evening, in my hotel, I mentioned this whilst chatting to a waitress at dinner. Without being asked she correctly identified the exact stop they got off the train at. The stops are only about a mile or so apart!

Ha! I thought the punchline was going to be, "Oh, that's just the McDougalls from Newcastle, pay them no mind!"
