Both he and Nina Kennedy had their 2021s de-railed.

I wonder if they & Budgie have given any thought to travelling to the US after the domestic 2022 season to set up a training base from which to prepare for World Champs, Comm Games & the DL.

Some US-level competition, generally available week-in, week-out, would be good for both of them instead of all these virtually solo exhibitions in Perth.

    • You'd think the prep of Aussie athletes will again be different next year with Covid restrictions dragging on. While there was the benefit of timezones for Tokyo, the two week returned quaro sucks and means an extended time away makes sense as you suggested.

            • Eloise Welling's 2:29.42 debut in London Marathon is 13th fastest Aussie all-time, and fastest debut ever. She was 14th

But, she got beaten by a veteran Diver was 12th in 2:27.16. 9 secs slower than last year, but very impressive for a 44 year old!

Wellings has been injury prone, so it's good to see that she finished. It'll be interesting to see what she can do in the future.

As for Diver, here's a recent ABC interview with her: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2021-09-...ning/100466028

                • Rohan Browning channelled his inner Jessie Owens by racing a horse yesterday as a promotional for a Sydney race series:

Here's the Sydney Morning Herald story.

For the visually inclined, here's a video via The Roar website.

He also talked about the difficulty of peaking next year with the WC just a couple of weeks before the CWG. His target is the WC as it will be for most athletes that qualify. However, there might be some that focus on the CWG because a higher result there might be more important than a much lower WC placing.

The minimal timing between the two will be an interesting lead in to a pretty intense competition schedule over the next 5 years or so.

                  • The CG/WC scheduling shouldn't be too much of an issue for short sprinters but it will be interesting to see the decisions made by others, especially those for whom doubling will be nearly impossible.

Will Ash Moloney do the Dec at WC and perhaps restrict himself to relay duties at CG? Maybe he would still enter CG Dec in case of any accidents/NMs in the WC?

Will our best marathon runners (females especially) prefer to save themselves for medal chances at CG and leave WC spots for any others who have qualified?

Assuming he is in 2021-like form, Stewie McSweyn can pick and choose as he likes depending on schedule and other entries.

Moloney will have more trouble than Browning because the WC 100F is on 16 July and the CWG first round is 2 August, whereas the WC Dec1500 is on 24 July and CWG Dec100 on 4 August.

Assuming there will be no relay at WC (or a first round disaster), that's a week less for Moloney, so probably too soon for another all out effort if he's carrying the usual aches, pains, niggles or outright injuries that decathletes usually have.

I can see some power athletes that didn't quite hit their peak in Eugene having a much better CWG. It will be interesting to compare and contrast.

I wasn't suggesting Moloney would be running any relay at WC - just something for him to consider as a CG event.

Important for whom? I know there's a lot of media pressure, as well as public pressure (at least from the public who only occasionally tune in to such sports) to appear and do well. But I'd have thought any serious athlete is going to consider a good result in a sub-standard field a far lower priority than to genuinely test themselves at World Championships? Do we expect the likes of Britain and Jamaica to field their best at CWG? They havent always in the past, and its even more doubtful in a WC year.

Neither was I, I just wasn't clear enough in my writing.

The reference to the WC relay was about Browning possibly running a couple of all out relay legs which are later in the WC program than the 100m which I used to contrast the gaps between primary events for Browning and Moloney. If Browning also ran the relay at WC, this would shorten the period between WC and CWG for him to be closeer to Moloney with the WCdec and CWG dec.

Back to Moloney on relay duties. I'm not sure any relay coach would use a decathlete as part of the plan because they are too unreliable on the injury front and the additional practice would risk injury on top of a decathlon workload.

Still, a light week and a relay session or two before CWG might work for Moloney if no dec. but a well drilled team of sprinters would likely still be superior, despite Moloney's attractive speed. This is especially true if the team makes the WC and runs well. Why would you mess with that at CWG when you're up against competitive teams like ENG, CAN, JAM, BER etc

Anyway, an intriguing proposition and as likely to happen as no male sprinters at WC at all. Another of the interesting things to watch next year.

Fundamentally, the public will provide greater recognition to a CWG gold medallist, or medallist, or finalist than a superior performance that brings them in 7th in a semi-final at WC.

Afficionado's might appreciate the 7th place more but who's going to get invited to the local school or Rotary event? The gold medallist every time.

If the financial support systems are structured in such a way that CWG results might be better for you, then game over. A serious athlete will do whatever is best to maintain support to get to a better prize down the road.

This decision will most likely weigh on the minds of those in events where there's a great differential in standard between WC and CWG. Those that will either be winners and losers at both won't even think about it.

I guess I wasn't clear enough in my writing either. I was thinking that Moloney might be used only as a finals runner in the 4x400m (and possibly mixed 4x4) at CG, not in a 4x1.
