    Great read.
And especially great to see how she has conquered her demons.

    • She's close to producing two full relay teams of offspring there too!

      • It was great to watch, showing she is still a winner in so many ways.

Amazing to think so many would consider her a 'loser' when she won back-to-back World Championships & Commonwealth Golds as well as World Junior & Youth Championships plus competing in the Winter Games. If only all our 'losers' could be so successful on the sporting field.

Great to see the mature Jana so happy with her life.

Wow, what an inspiring read! She is truly a hero, not only for overcoming adversity, but for finding such inner strength to succeed, while showing humility. Most definitely someone deserving our respect.

With six (soon) of her own plus two donations to other parents, that must be some kind of record for an Australian athlete.

One of the other things I found amazing from the show was that she studies medical lectures (while on an exercise machine) watching them in 2-3x speed. They sound like gobbledygook to the average person but apparently she comprehends/retains them word perfect.

            • ADELAIDE - 8 NOV
              100 (3.4) Murphy 10.20
              400 Murphy 47.23

Aidan - son of Tania - runs what is probably the quickest ever 100m in SA domestic history, albeit windy. His legal best of 10.67 (-1.3) came just two weeks ago, so the 18yo is in promising form for the season ahead.

              BRISBANE - 8 NOV
              100 (1.1) Greig 10.39 Clare 10.52 Taib 10.56
              200 (-0.6) Clare 21.57

              100 (-1.2) Edwards 11.66
              200 (-1.0) Edwards 23.17 Lewis 23.42

Two PBs into headwinds for Kristie Edwards including a huge 0.6 improvement over 200m.

              CANBERRA - 8 NOV
              100 (1.9) Roberts 10.53

              400 Pretorius 54.65

That's not as fast as Dean Smith's 10.23 during a decathlon in Adelaide back in '92. Wind legal but strength not stated.

Dean was a Qlder but had moved to SA and represented them at that time. Not sure if that fits with what you were thinking for "domestic history".

Murphy's time would be 10.26 with a +2.0, so would have been slower than Dean even with optimal legal conditions. As you say, Murphy is in promising form and hopefully runs the same time legally before seasons end.

For non-SA athletes, the fastest legal time in an actual 100m race is 10.34 +1.3 by NSW's Peter Gandy, who turned 60 at the start of September. He ran that lifetime best way back in 1982.

Fastest all conditions is a 10.13 +3.4 by Tasmania's Jack Hale in 2014 when he was only 16. That's a direct comparison on wind if not age. Other fast ones were:
                10.18 +3.4 Rohan Browning (NSW) 2014
                10.28 +3.8 Paul Di Bella (QLD) 2003

I couldn't find the fastest time in SA by an SA athlete but Athletics SA lists the following state record holders:

                Open
                10.40 Steve McBain 23/01/1967 Sydney 28-Mar-87

                U/20
                10.51 Steve McBain 23/01/1967 Athens 17-Jul-86
                10.51 Harrison Hunt 1/04/1999 Jamsa, Finland 1-Jul-18

Looks like he'll definitely have all those wiped before long. I might poke around to see if I can find the missing data.

Huh? Dean was a 10.8 man. 10.23 would have been just 0.01 outside the NR.

When was this comp supposed to have happened?

For domestic history, I was thinking about an SA athlete competing in SA domestic meets like interclub, so was excluding interstate or internationals in Grand Prix or national type meets.

And I just used my head lol - thinking of athletes like McBain and Bruce Frayne as the likely fastest ever in those situations.

Oh, I'm guessing you got it from the IAAF site, where it appears to be another error.

At that meet where he scored 7964 for the Decathlon, his 100m time was actually 10.97 (Source AA Almanac 1992/93).

                    • Yeah, I used IAAF and did think the absence of wind might make the time dodgy but it was on the legal conditions list.

Dean was actually faster than just being a 10.8 man, he was just held back by his deafness at the start. He always lost multiple tenths, especially in decathlons with the 100 being the first event - no point risking a false start trying to game the start. However, if he "false started" and happened to catch the gun, he would have been a lot faster.

I don't know exactly why Dean never got well into the 8k range because he had huge power levels. For example, distance in backward overhead shot throw is a reasonable indicator for potential shot put distance with good technique and Dean hit over 19m in the test!

Now, you wouldn't expect a decathlete to be able to fully develop the necessary technique to exploit it but his throws never even came close to matching the underlying power.

Frayne never ran a fast 100 in SA as far as I could see and he wasn't really a 100m man. McBain is more likely but his SBs were always interstate. Maybe it's worth considering going back to Graham Haskell in the early 70s because he seemed to run fast times regularly.

He did have the national record at 10.1h (interstate) and did run a 10.3h when nationals were in Adelaide when the track was rubberised bitument. But he did move to Victoria during his career and all handtiming and dodgy surfaces make it hard to tell what it was worth.

Still, the solution is for Murphy to put it beyond all doubt.

                        • I looked a bit further in IAAF data to see if there was a source for the 10.23 but the only 10.23 times run in a decathlon was by Ashton Eaton in his WR 9045 (10.23/-0.4) and Dan O'Brien in his windy 8844 in 1991 (10.23 nwi).

Eaton's time obviously has wind data and O'Brien's decathlon doesn't even appear in the IAAF database, so it can't have sourced from those inadvertently.

I looked closer at Dean's profile, Athlete Code 14178775, and found two surprising perfomances:

                          1998 3:48.76 Gainesville, FL (USA) 28 MAR 1998
                          1999 3:48.11 Fairfax, VA (USA) 22 MAY 1999

It appears that these actually belong to Dean Smith, USA, born 01 OCT 1978, Athlete Code 14251585.

I checked similar names Dean/Sean and Smith/Smit/Smyth etc and couldn't find a 100m man with a 10.23. The only other Dean decathlete was Dean Macey but it's not him, so the source remains a mystery on that site.

I also thought that it might have been a windy time for Dean Capobianco on the same day but ruled that out as well.

Have you already sent in a correction for this?

                              • New spikes shaped the 2021 season internationally, I wonder if we'll see similar impact in Australia who were less likely to benefit as they're released once the domestic season is over. I think the women's 100 and 4x100 relay records is on borrowed time. Clay and Browning raced in the Puma versions domestically, not sure if they got an upgrade overseas or not.
