In good conditions, Ella Connolly proves her windy 11.21w early in the year was no fluke and her 11.50 PB last week after returning from injury was merely a warm-up. She won by a mile. Moves ahead of Lauren Hewitt to be #10 AUS A/Time. And then she backed up for her first 400m in nearly two years with a half-second PB (#27 AUS A/Time).

At just 21, amazing to remember she ran in the World Champs 4x4 four years ago. Hoping she can have an injury-free 2022.

I've been working on an AUS W100m all-time listing using adjusted times. I've focused on on the most reliable times, auto with wind known, so it may not capture some performances. Even so, for Boyle, she only loses two times out of 22 sub-11.50 to non-auto times, so it's still pretty good.

Treat it as a work in (slow) progress but here are the top 20 ranked times (24 performances) in order of adjusted times. Adjustments using the work of JRM.

Out of the 24 times, MGT has 9, Pearson 8, Boyle 2, and one each for Hewitt, NP-K, Breen, Basic, Connolly.

I did some preliminary work on which sprinter had been affected the most by headwinds and it looks like MGT suffered the most. However, I'll have to review that before I post any detailed data.

For example, she matched Connolly's weekend time of 11.25 but into a 2.7 headwind and also scored the number one ranked time of 11.11 from an 11.34 also into 2.7! It's a shame she didn't have better luck with her runs, because some modest assistance would have had her still the national record holder.

I wonder how much temperature adjustment might also play a factor.

Boyle's 11.22 in the Montreal semis & Pearson's 11.17 from 2007 WC seems to be missing too (not sure if these are due to adjustment) - just wondering.

People complain about temperature a lot but very fast times have been run in cold weather, so physically it doesn't make that much difference compared to wind, which has a definite and quantifiable impact with altitude being a relatively much smaller impact than wind.

I've got Pearson's Osaka runs for H/QF/SF as 11.14 (+1.7), 11.31 (+0.6) and 11.32 (+-0.3). On that basis, the 11.14 heat time is in the list above with an adjusted time of 11.24.

Boyle's 11.22 (+1.1) in semi-final 2 adjusts to 11.29, as of course does her 11.29 (0.0) from the quarters. Both are ranked =42 on the adjusted list.

I've got 383 performances at 11.50 or better so far. I can post further down the list or by athlete if you are interested.

I think it shows that where you live can have a big impact on your times. If MGT had lived in WA, she would have had many more fast times but ruined by illegal tail winds. In Sydney and Melbourne, the evil headwinds got her! Brisbane might have been more conducive overall to matching good runs to good conditions.

Adjustments

As far as the underlying logic of the adjustments goes, JRM is the one to ask rather than my feeble mind but he doesn't seem to post as frequently as in past years.

But to give him an opportunity to point and laugh at the simpleton, my recollection is that strenght/power is fundamentally reflected in the time entered into the equation. If you lack power you just run slower anyway.

As far as temperature goes, I was dismissive of it's impact up above but JRM did a paper showing around a tenth difference between extremes of high and low density air into big headwinds. However, that's the maximum difference between the absolute best and worst conditions but when you are in the "normal range" of air density, where the bulk of performances are, the standard adjustments are all that are required.

Without a comprehensive data set of atmospheric conditions linked to performances, it's hard to tell whether it's worth the extra effort. I suspect probably not.

4x100
Hopefully, the collection of young guns will start retiring an increasing number of the top runs in the list. This should give them ample opportunity to rewrite the top list in the relay as well.

I notice that the false starter was Elona Reinalda, who the internet tells me was Australian beach sprint champion that year. She was also junior beach sprint champion in the early 90s and a member of the AUS world junior team. Sadly, she does not appear in my list, nor did I have any recollection of her name until prompted by a tour of the internet.

Mark Arbib has blamed it on 'a small number of LAA state officials' (Qld, NSW, Vic, SA) who are 'intent on holding power'.


Takes me back to the late 70s when men's and women's associations were in the process of merging.

I need to remember to download some clips from YT. I think it was (para) athlete Amy Winters who had uploaded the 1998 Comm Games 100 & WC 200 runs of Van Heer to YT but now they seem to be gone

I have them in the garage on VHS tapes but obvs YT much more convenient. Don't think I even have a VHS player anymore.
