You can see it more clearly in this video. He definitely starts to shut it down before the finish, shortening his last 3 strides.

One of those steps is past the line, he takes a short step at close to full speed as the step before that is the only place he eases up a bit, and at 12m/sec it lasts only 6 m at most, and the first part of that not much at all, and the guy to his right hardly closes at all. He did lose a bit by not leaning at the tape.

Thats more of the certainty. A lean would have given him an =WL at minimum.

            • At the Coetzenburg (South Africa), Middle Distance Track Series #3, Precious Mashele won the 5000 in . . . 13.38.50.
Gutsy parents naming their little boy that. I'm sure he would have had no trouble at all from the other boys in an American elementary school!

In REAL news, TrackInSun is reporting results of the outdoor Indian Championships, being held in Patiala, which is roughly the same latitude as S. Carolina. Why are they held so early?
Murali Sreeshankar LJed 8.26 (0.3), which exceeds his own NR of 8.20.

As far as I know, they have the same issue as Australia/NZ in fitting in a domestic season that ensurs they have their top athletes competing. If they started later, all their good athletes would never be seen in India because they don't have any Continential or Diamond League meetings.

They might also be trying to avoid the worst of the heat and monsoon season which normally starts in June for lower level athletes and the elites are just integrated with that need. We need an Indian correspondent on the board to confirm.

This year, it's actually a pretty tight elite schedule of only one month that's now finished with nothing until June:

February 13-14: National & International Race Walking Championships

                  February 18: Indian GP I

                  February 25: Indian GP II

                  March 5: Indian GP III

March 7: New Delhi National Marathon

March 15-19: National Federation Cup Seniors Athletics Championships

                  June 15: Indian GP IV

June 25-29: National Inter-State Seniors Athletics Championships

                  • WORLD RECORD!

At today's Chinese Winter Race Walking Championships in Huangshan 2 women went under Liu Hong's 20km WR of 1:24:38, including Hong herself.

But ... Hong is no longer the WR-holder, that title now belongs to the 2017 World champ Yang Jiayu who walked 1:23:50 (unofficial).

                    Unofficial times:
                    1 Yang Jiayu 1:23:50 WR
                    2 Liu Hong 1:24:27 PB
3 Qieyang Shenjie aka "The Tibetan" sub-1:24:55 PB (the broadcast didn't show her crossing the line)

                    Yang Jiayu's 5km splits:
                    20:56
                    20:56
                    20:52
                    21:06

As per the Omarchador blog preview they had the necessary minimum of high-level judges officiating in order for the race to be valid for record purposes.

I'm skeptical of China, Russia, and East African country officials insuring anything these days. Who were these 'high-level' judges? I hate to feel this way but I do!

                          • noted in the US thread, but Cejhae Greene of Antigua ran a WL of 10.01 in the 100. Watching the video though, was this just a perfectly timed start?

Looks like a false start to me! Definitely got the jump on that one.
