Ops, sorry, I didn't realise it.

Aleksandr Sorokin Runs New 24-Hour World Record

Lithuanian Aleksandr Sorokin has done it again, this time setting a new 24-hour world record by running 309.400 kilometers (192.252 miles) at the 2021 UltraPark Weekend 24 Hour race in Poland on August 28 and 29, 2021. The distance is still to be confirmed. Incredibly, to achieve this record, he ran an average pace of 4:39 minutes per kilometer (7:29 minutes per mile) for 24 hours.

This represents an improvement of almost six kilometers on what was previously thought to be almost-unbreakable 24-hour records set by Greek ultrarunning legend Yiannis Kouros of 303.506 kilometers (188.590 miles) on the track in 1997 and 290.221 kilometers (180.335 miles) on the road in 1998.

At the same link you will find the live results on the day.

Names announced include: Gianmarco Tamberi, Darryl Sullivan, Shelby McEwen, Donald Thomas, Michael Cherry, Isaac Makwala, Ronald Levy, Kelsey Lee-Barber, Barbora Spotakova, Christin Hussong, Maggie Malone, Stephenie-Ann McPherson, Quanera Hayes, Cornelius Tuwei, Oliver Dustin, Collins Kipruto, Liadagmis Povea, Ruswahl Samaai, Julian Forte, Marvin Bracy, Natasha Morrison

If you manage to find a not-geoblocked link, it will be aired on Rai Sport tv channel from 8.20 pm local time.
And alongside those numerous folks who didn't make Olympic finals, didn't finish top 6 in Olymics, and didn't come second in their last two DL starts is Linden Hall, stepping down to the 800m. She ran a big PR of 1:59.22 over the distance (her first sub-2) back in March. She takes on compatriate and national record holder Triona Bisset here, and it wouldn't surprise me to see Hall go mid 1.58

That's over 7 marathons! Wow I wish this was on OG sport. Makes me curious as to how the east Africans would do? I'm sure they would be right there as well.

            • Yiannis Kouros is a serious legend, akin to El Guerrouj and Bekele in his preferred events. This is an impressive record.

Are there even any OG events longer than a marathon?

50k race walking (which will not be in future Olympics).

If so, then, by my count, gh's gut is correct: Sagnia is the first to suffer three such demotions.

Most Ultra runners carry more weight than your average marathoner. There have been races of that length for a long time (to include Ultras on the African continent). It does not seem to be attractive to the East Africans, although that could be more of a reflection on the lack of monetary inducements than natural talents.

                        • Finnkampen today and tomorrow. You-know-who is in the mPV. When was the last time a WR was set in this annual (since 1925, with some time-outs) Sweden-Finland Grudge Match?

Mondo has the MR from 2019 - 6.00.

                          Other MRs

The 13:32 is no longer an MR, it got broken by Andreas Almgren.

There is very little money in ultramarathons. They have better ways to spend their time. Also probably not all that neurotic.... a characteristic of a lot of ultramarathoners.

In Boulder 30+ years ago the only real oddball athletes I remember were the ultra people...
