  • WA certified tracks around the world

Stewart MsSweyn's fast mile on a small town track prompted a discussion in the Aussie thread about small town tracks. I posted USA vs AUS stats in that thread but thought people might be interested in a world wide list.

I pulled the WA .pdf list and after playing with the very messy data produced some hopefully reliable stats by country. A breakdown by track surface is possible but I haven't cleaned that data but if anyboyd is interested, let me know and I'll start on that project.

A total of 149 countries out of WA's 214 members have at least 1 certified track. Here's a table by country by class, sorted by total number of tracks.

Interesting. What is the difference between classes 1 & 2?

I also find it interesting that this list has virtually no correlation to the locations where IAAF Diamond League, and 2nd and 3rd tier meets are actually held.

Via this 2019 IAAF Certification document

        https://www.worldathletics.org/downl...tion%20Leaflet

There are two types of certification for Tracks:
Class 2: Measurement survey to prove accuracy
Class 1: Measurement survey to prove accuracy and testing of the whole surface as laid to prove compliance with the performance requirements

Not the distribution of WA-certified tracks I would have ever guessed at . . . .

I reckon. How crazy is it that NZ and the USA both have 18. Why is it that the hundreds and hundreds of university and high school tracks are not certified?

Because there is almost no reason to. And counterproductive.....what if it comes up short according to WA standards?...then what...

                Why would they be?

Why 108 in India or 71 in Turkey? The numbers on the surface don't make much sense in some ways.

108 in India? That is odd...

10 outdoors in Britain makes sense....they aren't that common...

Portland had an Indoor WC a few years back, but on a temp track (presumably certified) that ended up somewhere I don't recall.

I wonder if the person/people who check tracks in India for the home federation also does it for WA, so you get a 2 for 1 deal?

Here is the list of all the certified facilities (PDF as of Dec 2nd 2020)

                              https://www.worldathletics.org/downl...s%20Facilities

Looks like the 4 indoor tracks are The Armory, Ocean Breeze, University of Houston and Gately Park in Chicago (never heard of/seen this track)
