The first part of the season recap: an update on young talent. It's been a pretty good season for the Polish junior scene.

Kornelia Lesiewicz (born 2003) set a huge NJR at 400 with 52.97 at the NJC - her first ever indoor 400 competition. She's also done 37.32 for 300 (just 0.01 slower than Justyna Święty's PB, set this year) and 1:29.42 for 600.

    Olimpia Breza (2002) 5:56.91 NJR at 2000.

Lilly Nichols (2006!) did 3.96 in PV. She's US-based, but has a Polish mother and dual citizenship, and intends to represent Poland internationally.

Anna Matuszewicz (2003) LJed 6.33 at the NJC. Roksana Jędraszak (2002) has done 6.20.

Marcin Karolewski (2002) set a NJR with 33.68 at 300.

Krzysztof Różnicki (2003) broke NJRs at 800 with 1:48.55 and 600 with 1:18.38. Kacper Lewalski (2003) was also under the old NJR with 1:49.50 in the same race where Różnicki set the record.

    Filip Rak (2003) 3:45.62 NJR at 1500 and 1:50.33 at 800.

Jakub Szymański (2002) improved the NJR at 60H to 7.68, then 7.60, then ran 7.64 and 7.65.

Mateusz Kołodziejski (2002) had 2.20, then 2.21 in HJ, and took silver in the senior NC today with 2.19.

Michał Gawenda (2005) set a U18 NR with 5.07 in PV.

Is Baumgart-Witan injured this season? Also Sabat and Ennaoui.

Also on the 800 theme, is this a permanent move up for Dobek?

Sabat is competing, under a new name (see today's results). AFAIK, Ennaoui and Baumgart just decided to skip the indoor this year.

Dobek said he's still going to do the 400H this summer. But his move to 800 has been pretty spectacular. He could run significantly faster, too - today, he did the second half in around 52s.

That is a pretty good set of marks for a year that is still not normal, and the number of junior records seems quite large -- is that because the participation indoors has not been that large, with few venues?

Yeah, the number of venues is pretty limited. But we've had a pretty normal domestic indoor season (subject to sanitary rules ofc) - most things in Poland have been in lockdown mode in recent months, but competitive sports have not.

Part 2 of the indoor summary: a few non-junior breakthrough and comeback athletes

Patryk Dobek, known as as a 400H specialist (2015 WC finalist, with a PB of 48.25) moved to a new coach and a new distance - the 800, which he hadn't raced since the age of 15. He ran 1:47.23 in his first domestic race, beating Michał Rozmys, and improved to 1:47.12 today, beating Adam Kszczot in the NC final with a huge negative split. He says he's still going to do the 400H this summer, but he could become Poland's next 800 star.

21-year old Krzysztof Kiljan has improved from 7.83 last year to 7.65 today in the 60H.

In the same event, Artur Noga (5th in the 2008 Oly final) equalled his PB after 13 years(!) with 7.64 in his first meet of the season. He couldn't quite match that in later competitions, but is still looking pretty good. He's always been a slow starter and much better over 110 than 60, so he's a possible threat this summer.

19-year old Pia Skrzyszowska, who already ran 8.05 as a U20 last year, has now improved to 7.98 in the 60H. Still somewhat inconsistent and not great technically over the hurdles, but has great speed, with 7.24 on the flat this year. Definitely one to watch out for in the future. Her mother Jolanta Bartczak was a EICh medalist in the LJ in 1988.

Joanna Jóżwik (2015 WC and 2016 OG finalist) is finally back in shape with 2:00.42 at the Toruń WIT this week. Angelika Cichocka was not too far behind with 2:01.07.

Klaudia Kardasz is also back, with 18.57 in SP, not far off her PB set 2 years ago. She's always had her best marks in major champs, so she could surprise at the EIC.

Adrianna Sułek, after a poor 2020, is also back, with a pentathlon PB of 4442 this year. She was on course for something around 4500 at the NC, but opted for a ridiculously slow early pace in the 800, following her top rival Paulina Ligarska. Ran 2:23 after a first 400 of close to 1:20, then got DQed for stepping out of her lane anyway. Still, good to see her back on track.

It should be a strong showing, but the result from 2017 (12 medals, 7 golds) is out of reach.

I am guessing they felt Lesiewicz too young to expose to the heat of the open 400. The depth of the women's 400 group is impressive, perhaps closing in on Jamaican depth. I'm a little surprised Dobek wasn't included in men's relay pool. He looked very impressive this indoor season.
