      • Thanks, Powell! I really didn't want to add another name to my long list of medal contenders for the men's discus. But today, I had to add Malachowski to my list because I believe he might now be capable of throwing 66+ meters this year at the Olympic Games! He does very well in Championship Meets and you just can't count him out!

        • Actually, it's been a while since Małachowski last did well in a major. I wish him well, but I think a top 8 placing in Tokyo would be a very good showing.

            2 Mateusz Borkowski 1:49.10

In the multis NC, both Polish Olympic hopefuls started out very well. Paweł Wiesiołek, who needs a fairly small PB to qualify, is on course for a big one and possibly even the big Q, with 4338 after day 1 (10.74 =PB - 7.68 PB - 14.87 - 1.96 - 48.40 PB). Adrianna Sułek, needing to get close to her Gotzis score, is up 7 points on it with 3802 (13.59 - 1.86 =PB - 12.87 - 23.88 PB). The weather forecast for tomorrow is looking good, so with no major mishaps both should make it.

Great day for Wiesiołek. He was in real trouble after the DT, where he performed well below expectations (over 4.5 meters below his Gotzis mark from this year), but he fought on, exceeded expectations in the last 2 events, improved his PB by 129 points close to his 30th birthday and pretty much ensured himself a place in Tokyo. Sułek was on course to do the same until the LJ, where she was way below her normal level (jumped 35 cm less than in Gotzis, losing over 100 points there), but it now looks like she will marginally miss the OG, unless there are a couple of withdrawals.

              • I forgot to mention Anastasia Mokhnyuk of Ukraine finished second in the heptathlon, just behind Sułek, with 6230. There were some international participants in these NCs, although Mokhnyuk was the only one whose score was of international significance.

                • Adam Kszczot announced he's not going to Tokyo due to lack of form. It looks like Poland will have just 2 representatives in the m800. Lewandowski has been talking about doubling, but I think he is going to stick to the 1500 only.

                    • The Szewińska Memorial in Bydgoszcz today is looking interesting, although the expected showdown between Rudy Winkler and the Polish HTers is off after Winkler cancelled his pre-Olympic European tour. The start lists are at: http://szewinska.domtel-sport.pl/?se...6-30&impreza=6

In other news, Karolina Kołeczek officially confirmed she's not going to Tokyo due to health problems, which barred her from competing all year.

I'm not sure if Andrejczyk was using a short approach, or if that was her full approach!

when the T&FN Rankings get calculated, you can be sure it'll go down as a win
