I think the expectations HERE have been realistic. There's no accounting for the hype from less . . . circumspect . . . people.

Well, I hope his first outdoors is smashing! Definitely looking forward to seeing him there.

IIRC....when this was previously discussed, it was mentioned that there wasn't any evidence of having played football at all in HS. So this is probably just track and field fan paranoia. Now the kid from FSU?

It's more of the OMG factor mentioned earlier. I expected a little more improvements commensurate with that OMG facto coming out of HS. But as also noted I'm still waiting, as we all are, for a proper outdoor season.
You don't seem to be waiting.

What your expectations of him be at this point?

You would be hard pressed to find a post on this board that was equal to the "OMG can he beat Bolt?" talk that was happening when he was in HS.

If anything, he is on pace, if not a bit better than what most here expected, during a global pandemic where his school and life experience changed drastically, let alone track.

Yeah, the beating Bolt was nonsense but I was thinking along the lines of next great American OG medalist in any of his events - 100, 200, 400, and LJ. America is so talented in all of those not sure I even see that just yet.

Well in the 60 I was expecting him to get between 6.50-6.55. In looking at some of the sub-10 list I don't see anyone who ever ran slower than 6.60 do a sub-10. Yet the expectation is that he will. I mean even those who are known for slow starts and great top end speed seem to have been able to do at least that.

In the 200 his improvement is the best of all his events - .29. He had a 20.31 outdoors in 2019 and a 20.66i so I think this improvement of 20.37i is good but its not so great to take notice and expect much in the 200m specialists in the US.

The 400 he ran a 46.15 outdoors in 2018. The 45.18i lead off seems likes a good improvement but again for three years out it's not something to catch the eye for a 400 specialist looking to do things on the world stage.

I did expect him to improve more in LJ given he had an 8.01 in 2019 and only improved 6cm in 2 years.

Maybe I'm not being realistic here but I did expect a little more from him given the talk and how well he did in HS.

I’m surprised we haven’t seen a groundswell for him to either move to the 800 or take up the decathlon...

one bad race and you are willing to consign the third fastest 200 guy in the world to football? Really?

Where did I mention football or the 800? I think you got me mixed up with another poster. I'm not saying he is not good just not at the level a lot of people where talking about - a OG medalist in any of his events. I still think he has a god chance I just expected better improvement for such an expectation. I might be wrong but no need for the accusation of dismissing him as a worthy sprint guy and moving him to the 800 or football. I never suggested such a thing!

Your motivation for piling on a 19 or 20 year old who has not yet had a decent outdoor season (I cut some slack for freshmen) is highly questionnable. Indoor track is obviously not going to be his forte. Even when he ran his 20.37 heat the other day he did not really look that smooth on the tight turns. Any knowledgeable track fan knows better than to expect some college freshman or sophomore to dominate even the college scene let alone the "open" competition. Like others have said, you need to back off a little and, at least, wait for this outdoor season to take place before you continue with your repeated trashing of Matthew Boling. Why is this such an issue with you?

What are you his Mom. "Trashing" - bro I'm a fan of his and this is why I expect things from him. Maybe that expectation is off or a bit too much but I never once trashed him. Jeez! There is no 'motivation' but to point out what I see and feel about these expectations. It's simply an opinion that I express. One that I acknowledged may be off so there is nothing 'suspect' about it. Like I said I am hoping and wishing for a great outdoor since we have not seen him there yet. Not sure why this is so touchy for you? I'm simply discussing and answering questions put me.

                            • All this noise about Boling's (paraphrased) slow improvement makes me hear numerous echoes of discussions we've had about several female HS stars who were slow to improve in college--or even regressed!!
Excluding such as Mary Cain (who had the ultimate perfect excuse for her "failures"--Salazar's abuse), I'm thinking Boling and others either were (A) overrated in HS, or (B) are coming along at a normal rate, not following someone's fantasy!
                              LOL
