I'd guess if Felix is played up as an Olympic focus by NBC....very likely....that she's running the final of either or both of the mixed/women's 4 x 400m. She's not going to be relegated to the prelim only.

This may be the case no matter which individual event she's in or perhaps even including if she's a relay pool only choice.

Before Doha I would have agreed with your general point, but Orin Richburg showed he will put the best four out there, regardless of who they are(or whose feathers he ruffles doing it). Barring injury(or a monumental upset in the 400 hurdles) I think it's fair to say McLaughlin and Mu will be two of the four. Unless Felix wins the open 400(or at the very least top 2) at the Trials she'll have a hard time cracking that lineup(though certainly making the team will get her prelim duty). One thing's fairly certain - she better come to the Trials ready to run sub-50.

I'll say, I did write that before Mu ran any outdoor 400s and was coming off her indoor loss. She was already a star, but I do think your right, Mu and McLaughlin are probably the two biggest US women's names after Felix and Sha'Carri Richardson (I think Muhammad is also up there)

For now though, I'm still of the opinion that if Felix makes top 3, and is healthy, she will run in the relay final. Doha was a great decision, but the saga of SRR in 2015 still looms for me. And Felix is a way bigger name (biggest in the sport right now?) and on a bigger stage where getting as many eyeballs is the goal.

Running 50.3 at the Trials, with 3 or 4 women under 50 in front of her, not to mention the three 400 hurdle entrants(if LIttle makes the team), as well as Mu, isnt going to get her a slot in that 4x4 lineup. But I agree they will likely gift her a finals mixed leg regardless of what she's running.

In that scenario the 200 result is meaningless. Relay judgement is made on the 400 result.

Edited to add: Depends how far outside the 400 top 3 she is. I'd be looking primarily at her time, as it will be put up against those who arent running the flat 400 but are known 400 quantities.

Yep, after watching Little run 400's and 800's and McLaughlin run 100H's, I'm looking forward to seeing Muhammad put her cards on the table.

I'm a little concerned about McLaughlin(emphasis on little). I sure hope she isnt planning on coming into the Trials having not run a 400 hurdle race in almost two years. Having run only sprint hurdle races this year - which operate on an entirely different rhythm - combined with her apparent 400 fitness(51.16 last month), that could be a recipe for disaster.
