  • World Relays 2021 - No USA.... & no JAM?

Teams are now starting to be announced. While POL will enter teams in every event, others, such as CAN, NED and GBR, will miss the non-championship events, and in some cases not even enter athletes in a championship event. JPN will focus on the M&W 4x1 & 4x4, while KEN are ignoring the 4x1's.

There are Tokyo spots up for grabs, so the event will be worth watching.

Interestingly, Justina Swiety-Ersetic, who DNS the women's 4x400 in Torun, is also not named in the team here. Does anyone have any update here Powell maybe?

    Let's hope the weather improves.
So far April has been unusually cold in Europe.
Today max. of 6C/43F in Chorzow.

Yes, it's been unseasonably cold over here in the last couple of weeks, but we're still 2 weeks away. It can't stay cold forever.

Re Święty, she did get injured at the EIC, but I don't have any specific info on her current status. Possibly just taking her time to recover fully.

Hoping the US names their team soon. It’s only a few weeks away!

          Are there no objective criteria?

edit - made myself look it up. This is verrrry interestink!

Athletes in the pool will be selected to the team by the Head Relay Coach with input from a relay selection committee, consisting of, USATF’s High Performance Division Chair, AAC Chair or designee, Men’s Track and Field Chair, Women’s Track and Field Chair, and an athlete of opposite gender of the Chair as selected by the AAC Chair.
Criteria for All Remaining Relay Pools:
Selection of athletes for positions on the Men’s and Women’s 4x400m, Mixed 4x400m relay, Mixed Shuttle Hurdle Relay, and Mixed 2x2x400m Relay pools will be selected in performance rank order based on the T&F News’ and World Athletics
          So
          A. A committee selects (that ain't good).
          B. T&FN has a 'say'!

I would imagine this early in the season it would be hard to base decisions on current results, and last year was such a strange year - so I’d imagine it’s the best they can do for this years relays.

with nothing but crickets from Indy, is it possible there won't be a U.S. team?

Apparently many of the top British sprinters are currently training in the US and Covid quarantine rules would cause major disruption to their training if they went to Poland.

I didn’t even want to go there but the thought did cross my mind. Even so, if not, a statement should be released saying that too.

from a CDC release of 2 weeks ago:

Key Information for Travelers to Poland
Travelers should avoid all travel to Poland.
Because of the current situation in Poland even fully vaccinated travelers may be at risk for getting and spreading COVID-19 variants and should avoid all travel to Poland.
If you must travel to Poland, get fully vaccinated before travel. All travelers should wear a mask, stay 6 feet from others, avoid crowds, and wash their hands.

Wouldn't that same advice to anyone traveling by air to anyplace else in the world?

But traveling to a pro sports event isn't exactly the same as traveling as a tourist. You will be REQUIRED to wear a mask and avoid crowds.

It sounds to me like the advice that they and other health authorities have been giving people who are not traveling at all.
