  • You Don't Wanna Know This

Today's edtion of L'Equipe (French sports daily) reports that Kelli White's urine sample turned up a "mystery substance." Not on the banned list, but it's something unknown that on further analysis might fall under the rubric of "or similar to" which can result in banning.

I'm not hip to all the testing rules, but some say she could also be in troulbe even if it's not a banned substance, simply becuase you're supposed to list all non-food items you ingest.

Gary (and the rest of the track and field world):

Why don't the powers-that-be just declare us all to be serfs and keep us on some great athletics reservation where they can control what we eat, what we say, our thoughts, words, and deeds. The whole drug testing issue is nothing more than a power play on the part of the power that be.

I know that I've opened up a can of worms with my words above, but I'll stand by my conclusion. I'm serious.

The drug in question is an antinarcolepsy drug. Calling it a stimulant is a real stretch.

This(or some other positive) means that we may not know who actually won the TFN contest until all appeals have been heard.

Hard to believe anybody would take that to get an advantage. Sounds like it's almost deliberately designed not to be like the kind of stimulants that are banned.

I think that was the concern that was intended to be addressed when T&FN stated a rule that results will be considered final for prediction contest purposes as they stand at midnight on the last day of the meet. In other words, any doping cases which remain unresolved at that point will be ignored.

Well, I was just kidding but that's a relief since I have White 3 times and would probably be DFL without her.

                      IAAF statement on Kelli White
                      Saturday 30 August 2003

Paris - A sample provided by Kelli White, USA after the 100m Final in Paris has tested positive for Modafinil. The IAAF has not yet received the results of the analysis on her sample provided after the 200m Final.

Today, we have received an explanation from the athlete to the following effect; Ms White has been taking the substance on prescription to treat a medical condition that runs in her family.

As both the nature of the substance and the content of her explanation require further inquiry and investigation, the IAAF has taken the view that bearing in mind the very serious consequences for the athlete of being suspended and being removed from competition at this late stage, the most appropriate course of action is to allow her to compete pending the completion of the necessary scientific and factual investigations.
                      ------
Above release may provide needed details.

Looks like Kelli was pulled from the relay despite the IAAF clearing her to run, due to the risk of future disqualification.

Not exactly a ringing endorsement of her innocence.

Trying to make sense of this affair in the age of immediate trial by media is sometimes tricky.

Based upon the reports of a press conference by IAAF medical official Arne Ljungqvist, it appears the decision to disqualify depends on the investigation of Kelli's non-declaration of the drug. Anyone know if the rules require the athlete to declare (or request an exemption for) the use of substances that will be banned next year? (Or for substances that are similar or related to other banned substances?)

The other matter is whether this drug is an amphetamine (serious) or more like ephedrine (less worrisome).

It further appears that if they determine that she should be disqualified for not declaring it (or getting an expemtion) then the medals are gone, and she'll either be banned for 2 years or just get a warning, depending on how they classify the drug.

One would hope that Kelli and her advisors would be absolutely certain about the reporting rules before taking any medication that is not required to stay alive.
