Many (most?) remain in school and continue to train in the same town, and hang out as they had before.

Based on comments from Mondo Duplantis and Athing Mu's club coaches, there is something to the college experience that they didn't want to miss out on, and both of them could have signed nice pro contracts right of high school.

On a related note - I hope NIL destroys the shamateur shenanigans of the NCAA. You should be able to run for your college team AND be paid as a pro. This is 20-effin-21, not 1950 AAU.

As long as it's not the colleges themselves paying the athletes beyond the usual tuition, room, etc. That would devolve into an arms race with some colleges sucking money out of the other parts of their budget and/or raising tuition and fees to pay top recruits, to the detriment of the rest of the student body.

At schools with big-time football and men's basketball programs it already was an arms race before the new NIL rules. Now the fat cats can come out of the shadows and conduct business in broad daylight.

I'm talking about colleges paying the athletes out of the school's own coffers. The NIL thing allows external entities to pay the athletes openly, not the colleges themselves.

I don't think it will ever be legal for colleges to pay athletes directly.

nor, do I suspect, it will be part of the protocol to pay for something other than "NIL" (name, image, likeness), which was created with football and basketball players in mind. I most def. don''t know this as a fact, but my guess is that for track people to accept USATF/WA prize money is out of bounds.
