Judging by Nozomi's 62/63s last lap she can go faster still. She's shown signs this late summer of spreading her wings by racing more abroad, so hopefully she decides to get in a DL 5000 next year. If so, Ririka Hironaka's NR of 14:52.87 will be in danger (if mega-talent 19yo Seira Fuwa doesn't get there first!). Fuwa is on the comeback trail after getting an achilles injury in February - 2 weeks ago she won her first serious race since then, a 32:55 10,000.
I think the issue with Tanaka is not so much about how many races she wants to run overseas (she wants to race many), but what kind of races she gets invited into. She ran a 3000m (and won comfortably) at a Continental Tour in Italy early this month. But maybe she is not fast enough to get invited to as many DL races as she wants to. She has a corporate sponsor but doesn't really belong to a "team" so I think her sponsor allows a lot of latitude regarding her schedule.

As a sub 4min 1500m runner she should be getting invited to some big time events through 5000m. Her 5000m pb should be faster and likely isn't at least in part because she hasn't been in a competition to get her there.

        • Amina Maatoug got off to a strong start at Duke. I'm not surprised by that. She is very scrappy:

          • More Nozomi Tanaka news! She's entered in 4 events - 800, 1500, 3000 & 5000 - at the two-day Athletics Challenge Cup in Niigata this weekend, a Continental Tour Bronze meeting. I wonder if she does all 4? She's run 3 events in the same day before ...

If she did all 4 her timetable would be:
            Saturday
            2.50pm - 800m
4pm - 3000m (she can take it easier here since the field isn't great)
            6.10pm - 5000m
            Sunday
            2.55pm - 1500m

The 5000 should be good with Ririka Hironaka and a couple of good young Kenyans also.

Entry lists - third link on top row under "INFORMATION" at https://athletics-challenge.jp/

            • Franco Florio (22) beat the +20 years old Argentinian record in the 100m with 10.11 in the South American u23 Champs (2nd behind Felipe Cardoso of Brazil 10.08).
He's a former rugby 7s player who even played for the National Team before focusing on the sprint.

Without 3000, this schedule would be easier than the one at the Nationals, where she had only 75 min between 800 and 5000. And she smoked the field with a 61 second final lap there. So she would have to run 3000 if she wants more challenge. On the other hand, it could be a great opportunity to go for a new PB if the two Kenyans are willing to push the pace.

I can confirm from the startlists that she's "only" doing the 1500 & 5000.

                          • I'm sure most of you have seen this news already, but CJ Ujah was cleared of 'deliberately' taking banned drugs by the AIU & WADA. The failed test was supposedly not intentional and due to contaminated supplements.

                            Hmm....

                            • Nafi Thiam changed coaches. Seemed to be plenty of mixed reaction in her Instagram comments, mostly positive from general fans but some Belgians not thrilled. She didn't say where she'll be training, or with whom.

how come only elite athletes get contaminated supplements?
