Re: Brussels Blowout
Back to Ayhan: I checked her splits from last year's Europeans, this year's Zürich and the WC, and they are unbelievable consistent. I think she was just a little tired from the rounds. (She was ALMOST caught by Szabo at the Europeans.)

Yes, isn't that what Alan Culpepper ran at Stanford last spring? But shouldn't that mean that if he was peaking right he could have been running 27:20 at worlds where it would mean a lot more (instead of 28:14). It appears that one of the few U.S. athletes who peaked right was Sandra Glover.Certainly, few of our distance runner were performing at their best in Paris....

As far as I know 27:41 beats 27:51.

The dismay shown over athletes moving around the globe to compete for other countries is trite and banal. Who cares what country they represent? Sanchez is a 100% born and raised American and if he chooses to run for DR, yay for him and yay for them. Hopefully athletics is more about striving for excellence than nationalism. Yes, I want the USA to do well internationally, but I shared in Sanchez's victory as much as Sanya Richard's anchor in the 4x4.

America needs another Sydney Maree. Import a few distance runners. Why not? They imported their sprinters some time ago.

<<27:51.06>>
Hands down Bob Kennedy has turned in the best performance this year by a US distance runner.
Kennedy will show today's US distance runners how the old guard used to run. Today's US distance runners don't know what it is like to run a 3:49 mile, an 8:10 Steeplechase, and a 13:00 5000meters.
Kennedy is the last of the great holdovers from the 90's.

Re: Brussels Blowout
What a shame for Ayhan that she did a 3:55 the week before Paris, AND the week after, but couldn't do it the one time she really wanted to. Two questions:
- Do you agree with the TV commentator in Paris who said she ran too hard too soon?
- Do you think her switch from the 800 in Brussels, to the 1500, was strictly to avenge her fade-out in Paris, or did it also have anything to do with Mutola's going for the $1 million?

Re: Brussels Blowout
You guy's should all move to Europe! I watched most of Brussels live on satellite TV (not to mention the entire WC.)
Perhaps the biggest story from Brussels is Kelli White's warm reception from the crowd. Despite incredibly negative European press, the fans seem to have "gotten it" that hers is at worst a borderline case. (I'm not justifying her choices, by the way.)

Being a Bob Kennedy fan I was pleased to see his good (27:51.06) result...but how amazing to realize that you can run that "fast" and get lapped!

Re: Brussels Blowout
Result from Brussels
SUREYYA AYHAN (TUR)
Winner of the women’s 1500m in a World Leading time of 3:55.33
“At first I was entered in the 800m race here in Brussels but then I decided to run the 1500m because I lost the final in Paris and I really wanted to win this race here.
“Of course I wanted to win gold in Paris, I wanted to be the World Champion but that was not my day. It was a bad day.
“Until two years ago I didn’t like running with pace makers, then I started liking it more and more. I wish I could have run with one in Paris, if I had had a pacemaker I probably would have become world champion.
“Before taking up track and field I used to eat rabbits. Then I stopped. And now I eat rabbits again!”

Re: Brussels Blowout
Just saw some coverage on Skysports News.
Powell looked awesome in the 100. Gaines got a cracking start in the 100 caught on the line by White. Mutola powered down the straight to win the 8 and the jackpot.
