  • Statement From Lagat's Manager

"Bernard Lagat and myself were both surprised and devastated by the news that
he had tested positive for a banned substance. Bernard denies categorically
that he has ever taken a performance-enhancing drug.

"We were informed about this matter by Athletics Kenya in Paris on the evening
of 22 August. After consultation with Athletics Kenya, we decided to withdraw
Bernard from the men's 1,500 metres heats the following day as his
concentration was not on the task in hand. In addition, Bernard suffered a
mild dose of stomach flu whilst in the village which weakened him physically.

"Bernard and I have been provided with some details of the A sample test but
are awaiting further information officially from the IAAF before commenting
    further.

"We are concerned though over the way this news has reached the public domain
as the B sample has yet to be tested and, as I have already said, Bernard
emphatically refutes any suggestion that he has ever taken
    performance-enhancing drugs.

"Both of us were hoping that this matter would remain confidential until, at
least, after the testing of the B sample as we are both aware that slurs about
drug taking can damage an athlete's reputation, even after an athlete has been
    proven innocent."

I would really, really, REALLY like to believe him, but there's just been too much of this going around to do anything else but to shake my head ruefully. :-(

The nice thing about these kind of press releases is that one doesn't have to spend a lot of time drafting them. Just go to the last one that got issued. They all say the same thing.

Funny they couldn't come up with a good excuse, must be still working on it...mind you, most have been used (toothpaste, hair removal cream, spiked by ex-spouse, supplements etc.) I'm still waiting for the anti-itch cream one to be used.

how about he was kidnapped by the Ethiopians, tied up, then injected by them as he was screaming in protest ? And they have threatened to kill him if he tells the truth, which he is now bravely doing by revealing their dastardly deed ?

Ouch! Thanks a bunch...I'd had banished that image from my imagination a few months ago!

                        Re: Statement From Lagat's Manager

It's not any testing procedure that's holding up the Lagat case, far as I know.

I don't have a copy of the Doping Protocol at hand, but as I recall, when it comes to the B sample (unlike the A, which is done by faceless techs in a lab somewhere), the accused can be there, and/or can his representatives (federation, agent, manager, lawyer, his own doctor, whatever). And the people doing the accusing have to have all their people in place also.

Getting all these people together when they're from multiple countries can't be done overnight. Need to work out a mutually acceptable schedule. I THINK I heard that the Lagat B hearing is on the 29th.

I think some of the cynical, rude comments above are inappropriate...what ever happened to "innocent until proven guilty".

It's "in a court of Law", where it belongs. Not in the regime of athletics.

I think the principle applys in both places.
