Scantling needs to run 4:42 to beat this commentator guy's PR

Scantling is having a great day, 67m is pretty good for being a bit injured (apparently) and 8226 - I'm guessing he is not going to run 4:20

I really hope Garland, Scantling and Ziemek all really go for it in the 1500. The latter two in particular might never do this well ever again.

I was REALLY hoping he wouldn't take his 3rd JT. He will go out hard for a 8900 score. 4:41 would do it (4:35 PR).

Scantling becomes the 8th best performer of all time, ahead of greats like Daley Thompson and Bryan Clay.

Garland becomes the 18th best performer of all time. That's also the all time best performance for anyone under 22.

                      No. 7 all-time performer, no?

                      • For what it's worth, for the 8 heptathletes who finished the event—and avoided an initialism along the way—the average difference between the actual scores and my initial predicted scores is 51 points, or 0.87%.

                        • Likewise, for the 9 decathletes who finished the event—and avoided an initialism along the way—the average difference between the actual scores and my initial predicted scores is 141 points, or 1.76%.

Yes, I was looking at an incorrect list. Scantling is 7th, Garland 16th and Ziemek 40th.

                            • 3 Americans over 8500. A first? (And if it's a first for a single meet, is it also a first for a single season? Yes, I could look this all up with a few database queries.)

If my memory serves me right (which is a big if) then the gold standard of US competition was the 1996 trials.
There were there three decathletes over 8,500 but yesterday's competition was better.
