  • 6 Nations In Bidding For 2011 World Champs

    (no specific cities named)

    Africa - Morocco
Asia - South Korea & United Arab Emirates
    Europe - Spain & Russia
    Oceania - Australia

I would posit that after Osaka '07 and Beijing '08 that South Korea will have a tough regional overload problem to overcome. My money would be on Morocco so the IAAF can get the never-in-Africa monkey off its back.

The world changes, but in the early '90s one could get to Morocco on Eurail, taking a ferry across the Straits of Gibraltar. No longer, more's the pity.

Assuming they won it, I wonder whether the Champs be held during the Oz summertime (like the '06 CWG), or in September (like the '00 OG)...

...or in December like the 1956 OG.

My guess (GUESS) is that the IAAF would not want to start a year with its showpiece event. If for no other reason than because the level of performance would be down markedly, and if it weren't, then a significant number of those who were in peak form in March would likely not be so when the summer series rolled around.

It's not exactly a surprise, but the Russian federation announced a couple of weeks ago that Moscow would bid for the 2011 WC. I personally think St. Petersburg would be a more interesting, and possibly more attractive choice, although I imagine the weather there is pretty similar to Helsinki.

I think it will be in Marrakech if in Morocco, Seoul and Dubai for SK and UAE, Madrid for Spain, St.Petersburg for Moscow and Melbourne for Australia]

I hope it's in Spain because it's closest to where I live

I wonder if it was hard for those in the Northern Hemishpere to train for that.

Or January like the 1974 CWG.

I agree with Garry on this - a late summer/early autumn if they go down under.

I am not 100% certain, but I'm fairly sure that the South Korean candidate city will be Daegu (also transliterated as Taegu). I attended their track meet last September, and they made it clear they were a candidate city for 2011.

I saw a picture of Dibaba racing there and from what I saw, the stadium looked pretty big.

Didn't they hold the WUG games there once quite recently?

Don't be fooled. Dibaba is a very little lady. 8)

It would be possible to host an Australian version in Brisbane in July-August... weather is significantly warmer than Melbourne...

                            Mean temperature: 15.6° C (Sorry I don't speak Fahrenheit...)
                            Max average temperature: 21.2° C
                            Min average temperature: 10.1° C
                            Precipitation: averages 56.7mm a month
                            Wind speed average: 9.4 km/h

Brisbane has stadium used for 2001 (?) Goodwill Games (http://www.qsac.org.au/) , whereas the track just used in Melbourne is being dug up right now so that the ground can be returned to its rightful winter use - Australian rules football...

                              Speaking of weather

What's the temperature range in Morocco in August? Hotter than Seville?
