Probably depends on the altitude. If up in the Atlas Mts (Marakesh, I think is there), probably not so bad. Along the coasts, maybe not so good. I had always assumed that when a true major was awarded to Africa, it would be SA. They do have facilities, but most of the best are probably at altitude.

BTW, does anyone know what events will be included in the World Road Running Championships? They don't have a website yet and I can't find the info anywhere else, either.

Europe - Spain & Russia
Oceania - Australia

I would posit that after Osaka '07 and Beijing '08 that South Korea will have a tough regional overload problem to overcome. My money would be on Morocco so the IAAF can get the never-in-Africa monkey off its back.

I agree it looks doubtful whether Asia would get it again. Morocco looks good for the Africa issue, but I woukdnt be surprised if Russia got it.

If Morocco's bid looks good, I'd say that it would be an easy choice. I'm sure the Moroccan federation would have El Guerrouj sell it well, and not only would it be the first world championships in Africa, but it would provide another continent shift, with 2009 in Berlin (of course, that hasn't meant much before, given that Osaka will be only the 3rd world champs outside of Europe).

Why did they change it from a half-marathon to a 20km? Seems pretty pointless considering the distances are almost identical.

Yes, I mean Debrecen. And I, like nevetslim, don't understand why they made such a big deal out of it and renamed the event when all that happened is an insignificant change in distance.
From the info that appeared on IAAF's site some time ago I understood the World Road Running Championships were originally supposed to include half marathon and at least one other (unspecified) distance. When did they decide it would be 20k only?

As I recall it, there was CONSIDERATION of more than race, but they decided against it for logistical reasons (hard enough for the hosts to crack their nut with a single race).

The decision to "change distance" was in response to prospective hosts, who apparently didn't want to be tied down. So the choice of distance is now up to the host city.

I think they said they would have a 5k, 10k and 15k race but they decided against it as it thins down the fields but I would wish they would change it back to a half-marathon. Surely it is a more high profile event than a 20km event.

I am not 100% certain, but I'm fairly sure that the South Korean candidate city will be Daegu (also transliterated as Taegu). I attended their track meet last September, and they made it clear they were a candidate city for 2011.

Yes, I have it on pretty good authority that Daegu is the SK site. And my Aussie spies say Brisbane.
