  • Oregon cross meet, reunion

On the front page. From the article:

"For the first time in years, Oregon will be the host school for a cross country meet in the fall of 2006."

    And:

"A reunion for Oregon track and field alumni has been scheduled for May 13 following the conclusion of the men's 10,000 meters at the Pac-10 Championships at Hayward Field.

'Oregon has never had an alumni reunion of any sort,' said Kelly Blair LaBounty, a first-year UO assistant coach and interim director of operations. 'We're inviting every UO track alumni since the beginning of time.'"

Kind of surprising to realize they haven't hosted a meet and almost shocking to find out they haven't had some alumni shindig over the years. Think of all the fun they've missed out on.

Yeah, and what about the fact that years and years ago when a cross country meet was hosted by Oregon it was run at Lane County Community College. This time change is good.

      ------------
Oregon hosted the Drenth Memorial XC meet during October in the 1980s and 1990s at Eugene's Alton Baker Park on the north side of UO campus with part of the course along the "Pre" trail. When I offciated at Oregon events I recall Drenth meet attracting a national field includng Univ. of Arkansas team in the mid-1990s.

Lane Community College XC course, 3 miles southeast of Hayward Field and offering great viewpoints for spectators, was a continuing venue for Oregon high school championships -- and for the cross country portion of World Veterans Championships directed by Tom Jordan.

I ran at the Drenth meet at Alton Baker in 1995. I was a frosh in college and was understandably excited about going to Eugene for the first time. I was fairly surprised at how poor the course was. I'm all for wacky/uneven/varied surfaces, but it really seemed like they just had to carve out a course where they could.

Are there other courses (without trekking to the meet at Lane) in the immediate area? The Lane course is used for the state meet, right?

Now you understand why the local track comunity had a problem with Martin Smith.
