The other athlete that comes to mind that might be able to do a pretty good 400/800 double would be a 400-meter hurdler. For instance, David Patrick.

Anyone know David Patrick's fastest 400 meter time or relay split? And what would his best 400 hurdle time convert to in the 400 dash?

Patrick:s 47,75 came 5 years after his 1.45,30. Was he a strength 400m hurdles runner (opposed to a fast 1-lapper)?

Well Patrick's best in the 400 hurdles was at least 48.76 (in 1987 or 1988) if not better sometime else. So I'd think that he could run a 400 meter dash better than in the 47's. And I think he did better than 1:45 as well. Did he not win the 1983 nationals in 1:44 something?

That 400m was his hurldes time (Indy 1988) - taken for granted that one understood that. Sorry. Yes, 1.44,70 (also at Indy, and still 5 years ahead of his 400m hurdles best). Question still remains.

I'd have to think at a minimum that Patrick ran a 46 relay leg in college.

                  Probably. Ran 3:rd leg of NCAA winning 4x400m (3.03,08) in 1981; won 1982 NCAA with a 48,44 (and anchored a 3.07,45 6:th-placer).

I just posted a new thread on the 400-800 double on the historical board. I asked David Patrick through an intermediary about his best in the 400 meters (to go with the 1:44.70 in the 800). He indicates that he ran a 45.75 in the open 400 meters and a 45.0 relay split. I think these were both in college. Given his 400 hurdle times, it would have been interesting to see what he could have done in the 400 meters if he had run it later in his career.

Patrick may well have run a 45-flat relay leg; 400 PR was 45.81.
