So that puts him at 7940---needs to run (if no more improvements) 5:10.36 to claim the CR.

He can get all the way to 8600 with a 4:43.32.

No improvement over the 60.00 (196-10) opener. So he's at 7940 with an event to go (hey, I got it right!) :-) .

So 5:10.36 needed to break the CR.

Kilmartin needs only a 5:17 for a PR. And a 4:42 t ojoin the 8000-point club; fastest he ran last year was 4:45.

My math says 5:06.38 to top TP's 8463 CR... could be wrong!

So Hardee has won every single event except the HJ (ONLY 4th at 6'6)?! This is awesome stuff. 8500 would be phenomenal at this point of the year.

Especially just a few weeks after tearing up half of his foot

That's what we normally think of as an excellent early year decathlon.

                    Hardee.....
                    79.3 first 400
                    2:41.3 at 800
3:43.6 with one lap to go
                    4:04.1 with 300 to go
                    rigging, shaking out his arms

                    and.... finishes in 5:06.73

                    unofficially 8462, one shy

It's probably fitting that Pappas continue to hold the record until Hardee can take it out with legal winds (not that the wind helped the 400m or the 1500m and maybe not the DT or JT either!) I don't think the 1500m will be a particular weakness for Hardee in the future--the ankle had to have an effect on preparing for that.

By the way, does anyone know how Pappas is doing?

Brain fart... I had Pappas's 4441 first day stuck in my head, so was projecting Hardee towards 8441, sted of the 8463.

Has anybody ever missed a major multi record by so little before? Methinks not.

Daley Thompson tied the WR once, so I guess he came as close as you can come to missing by one point.
So who wants to predict Hardee's PR at the end of the year after he's been healthy for a while?

Hardee's marks were wind legal based on decathlon rules. Does anyone know what the winds were when Pappas set the record? I can't believe he missed by one point! Did he ease the 1500, or did he really make a run for it. I wish I had seen it, because even for him a 5:06 is practically a walk.

That's true, the winds were decathlon legal for Hardee. I meant with legal winds under the rules for the individual events, but that's just my own quirk.

Hardee WAS trying, but the body didn't look willing
He was in serious rig state with about 250 to go and did well to maintain his pace.
