I was late but saw his 5.30 misses. Unless he smoked 5.20 by a foot, he should have saved himself for the final 2 events. He bailed twice and had no real shot at it on his 3rd. Kilmartin didn't have any good attempts at it either.
Ah, but the nature of the beast, the vertical jumps are "get fat city" . The effort expended vs the payoff is worth the risk.

Spend the stamp, but send it to T&FN, the keeper of collegiate records.

          A 62-second last 300m... OUCH!

          Still, overall a fantastic performance.

I ran a 15 once (3.45,81) with a a 36-second last 200m...last 100m over 20 seconds (what is bigger than the 1.500m equivalent of the 400m "bear"? jumping on your back the final straight-away?)

I don't see a time strip and without that, it's impossible to tell what his time was.

Trey just moved to #8 on the US alltime decathlon list. The 7 US guys in front of him include 2 Olympic gold medalists (O'Brien and Jenner), a silver medalist (Clay), 2 bronze medalists (Johnson and Huffins), the highest ever 4th place finisher at the Olympics (Fritz), and a world champion (Pappas). Elite company. Bodes well for his future, and that of the US decathlon.

I don't know what to say. Right now, I'm calling a big home field advantage bs.

This means in a 4:03 mile your last 100m was run at 5:20 mile pace. Listen brother- you had Momma bear, Daddy Bear and a couple of baby bears taking up residence on your backside. :P Musta hurt like hell!

It is more bs if they would only re-read if the photo if he missed the record than if he missed it or made it by just a little. The reason is that a re-read in the latter case could result in losing the record as well, so there is some symetry. If the re-read looks questionable, it might not carry the CR letters some of the places that it counts, like Here.

                        • Some interesting points from other websites...

                          from my website:

What does the NCAA Rule book say the Meet Referee's job is!!! point e. "Review all final meet results" - if there is any question - that is who it should be addressed to - not the guy sucking air after the 1500 just kicked the snot out of him. It was not his call.

it's not exactly simple. The UT uniforms are white, as is the line on the track, distinguishing them is sometimes difficult. It's very easy for the two to be confused
It's not just three points; it's .01 secs. And since, by rounding rules, 10.36 is any value greater than 10.35 (e.g. 10.351 = 10.36), there may be less of a difference than you think.
I've been a professional timer using Lynx systems exclusively for 8 years.

There are several cases with BW and color cameras and strong light where white uniforms can easily blend in with a well painted finish line. The leading edge of the torso can be difficult to distinguish.

This didn't happen in this case. But a very, very slight movement of the timers hand can mean the difference of 1/100 of a second.

You're assuming that the software can distinguish the finish time. That's not the case. The "TIME" that is automatically produced as an athlete crosses a line ata big meet is created by Photoeyes located immediately BEHIND the finish line. Some times this time is the same as the finish time, but often it is 1 or 2 100ths slower than the official time.

The software itself will not post any times. The official timer has to do it all.

                          • Followup on Hardee

The meet officials took the extra step of reviewing the tape of the Texas-LSU basketball game two weeks ago. Turns out the officials missed a foul on Texas' first basket 10 seconds into the game. The national championship banner arrives tomorrow.

They are currently reviewing a disputed first down in the opening possession of the 1984 Texas-OU football game.

                            • I notice that Trey's time in the 100m, although wind-aided, is better than almost all the times run in the 100m prelims.

                              • I had the chance to speak to the team at Delta Timing today and they informed me of several things about this situation:

                                1) No one from Texas -- or even Hardee himself -- told them to go back and "check the photo again" assuming their staff knew they only needed that extra .01 to get Hardee over the collegiate record.

                                2) The officials from the meet told Delta Timing to go back and check ALL results from their readings to make sure it was correct. Remember, at this time Hardee set a school and Texas state record in the event. I would have asked them to do the same thing if I was an official. So, if Hardee would have scored 8,205 points (for example), they would have still asked Delta Timing to go back and check.

In the end, it's not that hard to get information. All you have to do is pick up a phone or email them. They would be glad to assist in any explanation.

Bottom line -- there is no controversy. Everyone from the officials to Delta Timing did the right thing and got Hardee's score in the Decathlon correct.
