Then again, in the 18 previous editions of these Champs, the only US decathlon winner was Gunnar Nixon in 2012.

Nobody even close to the qualifying mark at Trials. Two college guys at 7400 with the senior implements probably would have ranked well, but I guess they didn't want to go.

Ok. That helps it make sense thinking about it. Not really a thing at the high school level and once in college the focus immediately shifts to senior implements.

Heck, she's already been 1.96 before her 17th birthday.
Her dad Dragutin Topic both peaked early (U19 2.37/7'9-U20 WR) and late (Masters age 40+ WR 2.28/7'5) maybe one of the most amazing 20+ year careers in track and field. 6 Olympics and 7 WC's. That's alot of jumps.

The sprint performances are a bit aided but fairly close to what these athletes could do in less advantageous locations.
It's a curiosity of our thought process. Similar with wind readings. If we're at 968m, we may think "ah, it may as well be altitude", but if it were at 1007m, we might also think "yeah, but it's hardly different from non-altitude". Kinda like seeing wind readings of 1.9 and 2.1.

To put into perpective how outstanding what Puripol Boonson is doing right now is this is how his wind and altitude adjusted results at age 16 compares to the results of Usain Bolt and Erriyon Knighton at age 16.

                  Boonson
                  100m: 10.15 basic: 1155 points
                  200m: 20.36 basic: 1164 points
                  Total: 2319 points

                  Bolt
                  200m: 20.13 basic: 1200 points
                  400m: 45.35: 1156 points
                  Total: 2356 points

                  Knighton
                  100m: 10.26 basic: 1118 points
                  200m: 20.35 basic: 1165 points
                  Total: 2283 points

It is of course always impossible to predict how much a young sprinter is going to develop before they reach their peak but it is very clear that Boonson is one of the best 16-year old sprinters of all time.

Tebogo 9.91 U20WR, shutting it down over the last 30m. Boonson loses a medal because of slow reaction time.

Just watched one of the greatest "showboats" of all-time in the U20 100 meters. Contrast with all 23 decathletes taking a victory lap together and high fiving the crowd. 9.91 for Tebogo at age 19 at altitude still not Brommel's teenage 9.84. What could he have run if he didn't run sideways the last 30 meters ?

Thats what the little round arrow "10 secs forward" button is for on Peacock : )

Don't understand Tebogo's reaction. Just rude and unuseful showboating.
Awful start for Boonson but he definitely can give Tebogo a run for his money and bring him down a peg.

YouTube here. But live is live. At least we could see these field events earlier, tonight was just call rooms, stands and medal ceremonies.

I agree with you. It seems like the U20's are trying to mimic the Olympics and WC's in a hot, empty Cali Stadium with endless delays, medal ceremonies, officialdom, and a needless background music loop that is annoying. They need to be more like a well-run State Meet that's trying to beat out bad late spring weather. Watching live is a bit like a cricket match with the commentators looking for something to say since they don't know the players. As a multis fan I did appreciate the extensive decathlon coverage. Overall Peacock is doing a good job considering the set up.
