      Wouldn't head to head competitive record be kind of difficult to use when evaluating athletes in different events?

I think indoor gold (which obviously Sydney can't get in 400h) kind of balances out with Sydney winning her NC which Yulimar doesn't really have. That's why I gave Yulimar more than a slight edge with titles but not a big edge. I also think DL series is a bit diminished this year with the WC's being held early followed by CW/EC's and no one really peaking for the end of August /Sept.
        Ok I get what you mean about indoor champs balancing out with nationals for Syd but like, Bol competed indoors over the flat 400m and got gold so Imdon't really thank that works, especially because Sys has already shown her ability over the indoor 400m with that 50.3x in like 2018

          It's my understanding T&FN AOY only considers an athlete's primary event, but I may be wrong.

          • Now that "world record season" has ended with Kipchoge's amazing run, here is some info on how much world records were improved by the 5 record setters this year:

            Sydney 400IH (1.267%) Amusan 100H (0.655%) Yulimar TJ (0.446%) Kipchoge ( 0.411%) Mondo (0.322%)

            Should how much one improves a world record be factored into the AOY decisions ? (for comparison, Beamon improved the LJ WR over 6% at '68 OG)

              • I suspect there's been plenty of AOY winners who've largely won because they have been number 1 or won gold in 2 or more events.

                      From the 2019 T&FN AOY edition:

                      Voting by our 36-member international panel in this annual exercise—our 61st year of choosing a Men’s Athlete Of The Year—was scored on a 10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 basis. Voters are required to respect the order of our World Rankings in casting their votes. Any ballot that doesn’t follow the norms as established by their peers is discarded…​

                      • It's complicated. You can live by being a doubler, JI in the 1500/5000, (to use a men's example) but you can die there also.
                        He was undefeated in finals of the 5000, but his 1500 WC loss leaves him . . . imperfect.
                        Meanwhile Lyles has a spotty 100 record, but the fact that was clearly a 'secondary' event, won't hurt him as much.
                        Having hard and fast criteria leaves the process muddied by such circumstances.

                        Be undefeated in the event you contested at the Global Championship, set a WR (or at least an outlying performance), dominate your opponents.and the yearly list

                        Mu (like Syd, only 4 meets)
                        Kipyegon ('only' 4 (what a 4!) 1500 meets but a 3:52, 3:52, 3:50 is mind-boggling)
                        Jeruto (another 4-meet season, but all quality)
                        Sydney (4 meets)
                        Rojas (5 meets)
                        Ealey (11 meets!!)
                        Feng (undefeated in her 2 meets, for all we know . . . I suspect won't get many AOY votes)
                        Thiam (only 2 comps, but a EC/WC double ain't bad)

                        SAFP will get lots of votes, then there's Jackson, Tsegay, Amusan, etc.​

                          Thanks, I think I found my answer on the other pages in that edition, at least noting that Indoors for field event's does hold weight, doubles through the year and at worlds/olympics holds weight

                          Im surprised if this is relatively clearly laid out, why there seems to be so much confusion (from my end as well, not accusing anyone) year to year on what counts.

                            Thanks for clearing up GH, question: how does T&FN deal with athletes whose events have a clear indoor season, and athletes whose events have no indoor season (when it comes down to 2 or 3 dominate athletes in AOY?)
