  • The marathon season is not over but I will definitely put Chepng'etich over Mahuchikh or Leon for now.

Absolutely.. A bit surprising to see world silver winner Mahuchikh put above Mu (she is also nomimated for Fair Play award). Her 2.05 is top ten all-timeish, but so are Mu's results. Are there politics at play here? Or does missing post worlds Diamond League count that much?

1:56.3 is 121 on the all time list, 2.05 is = 24, 2.03 is also = 91. Those are not the same

World Indoor champion and Diamond League champion, those count to WA as well. Mu ran basically four meets.

Based on quality of marks, Jeruto (also undefeated in four meets) has a much better case than Mu, with 8:53.02 (#3 all-time), 8:57.97 (#13), 9:01.54 (#31), and 9:04.95A (#69, without adjusting for altitude).

Comparing all-time rankings for a new event like the women's steeplechase against other events that women have contested internationally for decades longer isn't a fair comparison.

Jeruto is one of the big names who missed out. Same for all the top marathoners; either Yehualaw or Chepngetich probably should have been put on the list. Additionally, depending on how Valencia goes, Gidey might have deserved a slot as well.

Mahuchikh, maybe, but Leon is the only athlete, male or female, who won 2 individual golds at the WCs.

                    • the sympathy vote is undoubtedly very much in play for Mahuchikh

What I'm referring to is both are top ten all-time performers (amongst the 10 best ever in their events), so their results arent just flukes in a "down year" in their event (but they are also not close to WR's)

                        • I'd say most would agree Sydney, Yulimar, and SAFP will be 3 of the top 5.... Who will make up the other two spots when they are announced? Could a world record breaker not make the top 5? Has that ever happened before?

On the men's side, in 2005 Asafa Powell broke the WR with 9.77 but didn't make the AOY top 10 for T&FN. I couldn't find the IAAF AOY results for 2005.

There have been world record breakers who didn’t make the top 10 in their individual event.

Here is the top 10 voting: https://trackandfieldnews.com/tfn-at...10-voting-men/

Even more recent though is Letesenbet Gidey in 2021 who set WRs in the 10,000m and Half Marathon but wasn't in the AOY top 10
