I think that ETH's 2021 season had better individual performances and she had an amazing middle and strong end to her season. However, the beginning of her season was much more middle of the road. Contrast that to SAFP, who maintained a historic level of form from May to September, won her 5th 100m title, her 4th Diamond title, only lost once over her primary event, and won world silver in her off event. The ceiling of ETH's 2021 season was higher than SAFP this year, but the bulk of her season was on a lower level. Also, SAFP ran 40% of the t20 all time this season. If at pretty much any point in the last 20 years you told me that a woman would run sub 10.7 7 times in a single season I don't think I would believe you. But that's exactly what SAFP did this year.

    • I agree with most of your posts, but i'll still pick an athlete who won more global titles and broke a world record regardless of how many races, she lost when she won the ones, that mattered the most over supernatural consistency and i'll be honest, if Shelly-Ann had competed at least at the Commonwealth games or the NACAC games, i'd pick her over Amusan but she didn't. And, the 100m hurdles is arguably the most competitive event right now, so Amusan can be excused just a little for some of her losses. Besides, let's be honest. It was apparent in the middle of the season, that no one was gonna be able to handle Shelly-Ann except for last year's Thompson-Herah in the 100m. That's more kudos to Shelly-Ann tho.

      • What sort of performance would Yulimar Rojas have needed to produce, to win this year's world athlete of the year award easily? A jump over 16m? She won everything she could, this year. The world indoors with an absolute world record, the world outdoors with a jump, that would have make her the second best female triple jumper in history if she wasn't already the world record holder. She was undefeated too, and competed quite consistently after the world champs in Eugene.

I completely agree. I think last year Rojas 100% should have been awarded AOY and her season this year was on a similar level. I know I've been harping on a lot about how good SAFP was this year, but I've thought for a while now that AOY should be Rojas, at the very least to make up for the absolute robbery that happened to her last year

          • WA currently has voting on social for AOY and Amusan is leading by a lot since the whole country is behind her. I hope these people realize that the vote won't be decided by number of Twitter likes. Going to be some really upset Nigerians.

On instagram she has over 140k, behind only Mahuchikh with 153k. Garcia Leon is in third on the platform with 75k.

That's a huge discrepancy with Twitter, where Amusan has 60k retweets and Gargia Leon has 20k, but Mahuchukh has 190.

which of WA's 5 would you replace her with? that's a pretty tough collection.

While it is hard to argue with two WC golds, I imagine some who are not race walking fans would easily rate Kipyegon's undefeated (but brief) season in her specialty ahead of Garcia Leon.

                      • I would have easily put Shericka Jackson over Kipyegon in any consideration for the top 5.

I also would put Jackson over Garcia Leon, but I dont follow walks enough to know what occurred outside of her 2 golds or even how frequently they compete.

Like you, I don't follow the walks enough and would like to know more about how her 2 golds (one in a relatively new event) followed by a season where she lost 4 of her 5 other races qualifies her as AOY? Her 20k time barely broke the all-time top 100 (98th) and her next best 20k time is 418th. Maybe if there was an award for "best meet of the year" or "week of the year" she would be near the top, but I just don't see her ahead of Kipyegon.

I also don't understand the switch from 50k to 35k.....

I think there is a built-in "geographical diversity" factor in the World Athletics selection of the AOY candidates that doesn't exist in the T&FN voting.

I think what many people on here are missing is that Garcia León is the only athlete, male or female, who earned two individual golds in Eugene. Combined with the fact that she earned multiple other major medals and set an area record, I think that is more than enough to put her in the top 5. Also, when you look at the fact that pretty much all of her races were championship races (WC, WC, South American champs, Team Champs) with only 2 non champs races in the 20k where she came 1st and 2nd, I think it shows a super strong season. I would also argue that her season was at least as good as El Bakkali's and Ingebritsen's on the mens' side, and both of them made top 5 as well.

Whenever there is a RWer being treated as equal to or better than athletes in other events, the collective fan base of the sport will lose it's mind and look for any rationale to denigrate the performance or event in a manner to make their preferred athlete or event seem superior. Start with the "ideal" outcome and work back with whatever random data can be found to show a clear path to the desired result. Classic insecurity fueled by ignorance. T&F's MAGA-like mindset.
