Up until COVID there was a gala night in Monaco and then in 2021 they had a live stream with no in-person audience, a few athletes appearing on stage but many appearing by video call.

              • Great job WA and T&FN in selecting quality over quantity.... Agree with ATK can't wait to see the voting !

                • As if those that competed frequently over the course of the entire year didn't provide quality as well???

2022 was a great year for quality in women's track and field, why the question? The issue was "Oh she didn't run enough" so someone else should be AOY. However, as far as I know, no other women broke a world record twice in 2022 or 4 times in 14 months. World records are pretty hard to break. When you break a world record 4 times in 6 finals (2 for 4 in 2022) you pretty much define "quality over quantity" in a way that will probably never happen again on the track in our lifetimes. It took 36 years for the record to drop 1.5 seconds, she did that much in 6 races. Greatness was recognized by both WA and T&FN as it should be.

                    • The two WRs in 2021 should be irrelevant in the discussion of who should be the AOY in 2022.

But it does give context to the records she broke in 2022. She smashed the 400H World Record last year and then this year, smashed it again, TWICE. .

Not always!...this was a great trivia question from a while back.

Which athlete (not a walker or marathon runner) was ranked in T&FNews Top-10 rankings one year when he had no competitions in that year?

Or maybe the record was soft before 2021. Or maybe the new shoes benefit 400mH more than any other event.

In any case, the records in 2021 already counted for the selection of the AOY in 2021. It's not like someone who broke the record in December after the selection was done for that year.

So during the 24 year period when the record was broken only one time only "soft" women ran the 400IH?

Or maybe she's just that good?

                              • When Privalova could win the Olympic gold in the seventh race of her career, I had to question the quality of competition in 400mH. And that's just one example. With all due respect, 400mH failed to attract the top talents in the sport for some extended period.
