Sorry to be blunt, but this is pure BS. Not all Crossfitters work equally hard. Some work harder than others. There is a Crossfit box inside my gym, and only a fraction of their members are working hard.

More importantly, you don't know how hard the elite athletes in all different sports are working. No one knows that. That statement is insult to all the athletes who are working harder than you could imagine.

Despite the great appeal (to me) of hi-jax, I see the cue card and it says, "Exit Stage Left!"

While I agree that as a whole the 400H was fairly soft back in that era,
this stat can't be true - perhaps you're only considering auto times? Jim Bolding had a huge season in '74, as one example, though I think his best marks were hand times.

You are correct on this. He had 48.1 and 48.4, according to Wikipedia. I just looked at the WA list, which we know to be incomplete. His fastest electronic time seems to be 48.55 in 1975.

            • Back to women's 400mH, between Pechonkina and Muhammad, the following people made the yearly # 1 ranking. (200m / 400m PB)

              Lashinda Denus (23.35 / 51.09)
              Tiffany Williams (23.75 / 52.45)
              Melanie Walker (23.46 / 51.61)
              Zuzana Hejnova.(23.65 / 51.90)
              Kaliese Spencer. (23.11 / 50.19)

So athletes with modest flat speed could be ranked # 1 in 400mH. Spencer is the only exception.

                • Ledecky receiving AP athlete of the year above Sydney today is absolutely absurd, but somehow I don't mind. The voting was so close that if even one of the Ledecky voters had placed Sydney on top instead, the outcome would have reversed. The entire list of names in the Top 10 has a laughable American slant. At least 5 of them should be replaced by international athletes who the voters probably have never heard of.

Ledecky didn't even have a particularly great year. She changed coaches and training locations, which resulted in improve performances at 800 and 1500. She broke a couple of records at short course only because she never raced short course meters during her prime. She lost her long course 400 world record to Ariarne Titmus.

                  • Looking at the voting, Ruth Chepng'teich getting no love is sad to see. Surely running no 2 AT counts for something.

                    • Wow, Im actually surprised at how clearly the voting had the 1-2-3.

I'm always curious how many ballots they have to throw out because they are either biased or ill-informed (despite the info sent with the ballot).

edit - I note the comment on Mu: "another member of the play-it-close-to-the-vest club, limiting herself to just 4 meets in 800.".

Wasn't she sick and/or injured leading up to the WC? That's a good excuse and why I think she looked so emotional after she barely won.

Kimberley GarcĂa must also feel a bit slighted.

                          • Looking at the top 10 I'm very confused over Mu's presence. Her season was by no means top 10 worthy compared to Ealey, Garcia Leon, Chepngetich, Gidey, and Tsegay. They all competed more/won more medals, and had much higher quality of performances.

Totally agreed. Mu should not be in the top ten.

Thanks GH for posting voting.... Agree with you ATK and also a bit surprised it was so clear. Also the "spread" of SAFP's votes from 1 to 8 (with 5 at 7th?) quite interesting.
