Why is Winger retiring?
After a career less then brilliant (until this year) why would she call it quits now? Surely another two seasons?
If she wants to start a family - fair enough. But can't think of any other reason why she would pull the plug.

I think she was a bit flustered by sensing Muhammad so close off 9 and it caused her to think too much.

Hodgkinson (20 races) Moraa (23) and Goule (25) have all raced a lot this year, but Hodgkinson with those 3 championships very close together is just as tired I'm sure. And all 3 more exhausted than Mu and McLaughlin, whose combined race total equates to 25, having hung up their spikes on 24th July/8th August respectively - quite bizarre really.Last edited by Wiederganger; 09-09-2022, 08:16 AM.

Eugene is not ideal for final especially if they insist on holding it during late afternoon to cater to the European time zones. I couldn't escape that thought tonight. This event has to be in full darkness. I refused to watch today until it was fully dark today here in Florida. Only then did I look for the tape on Peacock. How is that parade of athletes going to work in Eugene if they are circling a half empty stadium with almost nobody seated on the far side? Americans are prone to filing out anyway. Plus it's still going to be partial daylight, which doesn't align with the light show entertainment they have been featuring in recent years.
I realize the aftermath is not the heavy priority. I like it. Every situational angle should be taken into account when choosing the venue. But easy fix if they give away tickets to manipulate as large a crowd as possible, and hold it at standard night hours for the Pacific Time Zone. Europeans were forced to watch Tokyo morning finals during the middle of the night.

Hodgkinson was intimidated by Moraa. I thought that was easily the biggest takeaway from the night. She obviously didn't feel capable of challenging Moraa head to head down the stretch so rather than carry the mental burden of another failed attempt into the offseason she backed off and ran the race entirely differently than she would have if Moraa had not been there.
Not altogether surprising. It's the reason I always keep an eye on the head to head aspect. The playground realities are often so much more relevant and revealing than the personal best and season best nonsense that commentators obsess over.
Moraa is a difficult puzzle for Hokgkinson because there's no obvious solution, in contrast to facing Mu where exiting 2021 Hodgkinson realized she had to learn to be more aggressive early to remain within striking distance entering the stretch.
Otherwise there were lots of ordinary results mixed with a sprinkling of excellent ones. That seems to fit this season, which has even more of a distinct bell curve than typical. Track and field always has that tendency but this year it's been glaring on all levels especially with the top juniors. One after another peaked in midseason and recently have regressed all the way back to where they began the outdoor season.
Bol needs to enjoy that second Diamond League trophy. I imagine Sydney won't allow her to have another one next year, given Eugene. Of course, you never know with Sydney, who might decide anything else is a priority. Bol today was clearly very tired. Notice she chopped to 16 steps on hurdle 10, using her much weaker right lead. I think she was a bit flustered by sensing Muhammad so close off 9 and it caused her to think too much. Consequently that's easily the slowest she's been from hurdle 8 to the finish either in 2021 or 2022. She reached 8 in 36.7 then required an additional 16.33 seconds. Her typical time is 15.9 to 16.0. Ironically her most recent race was the fastest she has ever covered that stretch...15.75. In that Lausanne race she reached 8 in 37.2 and finished at 52.95.
Now she'll attempt to switch to 14 steps in 2023, which will be a challenge given that weak right lead. I don't think I've ever seen her use the right lead before hurdle 8. Her right lead bends severely and doesn't cover near as much ground. She'll have to partially fix that if 14 is going to succeed. I imagine it will lend to more erratic results.

I really hope Dalilah comes back stronger next season. It's been so hard to watch my fav perform like this.
