If she were running low 50s right now I would be more concerned. This is a build-up period in a rust bust race. The time to be racing FAST is in the summer, as we see the Jamaican lady sprinters work to perfection year after year. Underwhelmed should be in no one's vocabulary in early January.

I was surprised she ran so well considering the awful track! How anyone could concentrate with that amount of people and stuff going on in the infield I don't know! Time-wise, whilst not massively impressive, it was a very decent opener. We expect a lot of her because of her range, but imagine if DAS, or SAF or Thompson or Gabby Thomas i.e. other 200m sprinters, opened their '23 season in Jan with a 51.7 over 400m, we'd all be very impressed.

I agree with the above; this was just a rust buster. She has a new focus this year, with no doubt a whole new approach to her racing programme. Let's be patient.

For the decades that some people have followed track and field, some of the conclusions drawn are mind blowing.

She went to school there. I don't think it had any effect whatsoever.

In my experience, indoor track has a positive effect, with people cheering right near you.

Im not concerned or alarmed or anything but when Abby was in the ncaa everytine she stepped on the track she came to slay. Her 300 pb indoors was set in December if I remember carefully and by Jan she was already bringing that heat. Im sure she is scaled back because there are no ncaa indoors to worry about but i have to readjust to Abby as a pro gimme time.

I wanted to see maybe 51 low. Arent ot tracks also supposed to give a slight advantage vs all the tracks except say Arkansas and Gilliam.

Its outta pocket to put Et DAS and SAFP in that example. They have never been known for being impressive over 400. I maybe would bbe content with Gabby running that time. Abby for me is one of Americas best 400 sprinters atm she is prob neck and neck with Athing Mu at least with only SML being the only one i suspect could really give her a warm time and my sweet dear AF is now off the track(tears emoji). I just expect big things from Abby for me she is like Felix heir apparent and I see her being competitive in all the sprints. I get nervous when these girls leave college and lose that hunger i seen it with Kimberlyn Duncan and many of the lsu girls who i thought would be moving and shaking but havent done anything so my ptsd is acting up I wanna see sparks of brilliance from Abby early. She doesnt need to burn down the track but I wanna see the lights are on and Abby is home

I think Abby Steiner can set a 50"3 performance if she keeps focused in the 400m indoor.

Perhaps, but there have only been 27 performances all time below 50.40. I was looking at that list the other day for refresher purposes. I think in transition to indoor we lose sight of how much slower it is than outdoor, and that fewer are able to adjust, or fully emphasize. The 27th fastest outdoor result is 48.85.

I think quite a few of the fastest 400m women outdoors have never run the distance indoors. Amongst those that have I think Koch and Kratochvilova did their last indoor race quite some time before they ran their fastest outdoors.

Abby is an remarkably adept at running indoors.

Agreed, but I think Awsi Dooger's point was more about the in/outdoor differential. I reckon this run shows Steiner would be in sub 51 form outdoors right now, which is fantastic.
