  • 2023 USA Road to Budapest

Qualification for the 2023 WC started Aug 1 for most events. The bad news is that Q standards have tightened up considerably. The good news is that Rankings will fill out the fields and the USA has fared well in that department in most cases.

Here's where we stand. The Q mark is listed for each event and the names in red are already qualed, either through a WC title, a DL championship, a NACAC win or attaining the Q already. The names in black are the most likely candidates (right now IMO) to get the Q. No names in an event means we will have plenty of Qs.

Pretty sure latest from WA is that an NACAC win is not a qualifier in most cases.

Dunno. Above my pay-grade - just going by 'area champion' dictum.

I tried to cut and paste from the current qualification document, but that is apparently way above my paygrade as well. That document is a mess. Anyway new verbiage is in there.

I see it now. I think it says they DO qualify, but when it's time for a nation to select their team, Rankers 'rank' higher than Area Champions, so that eliminates virtually all American ones except maybe Thompson in mJT?

Speaking of Thompson, check out his world rankings score (WA variety) and you'll see why so many US athletes went to the NACAC meet. His win there with a "decent" mark earned him a whole mess o' points.

With this new qual system for WC/OG, the quality of the USA team for NACAC should continue to improve.
