    Welcome Baby New Year!

Yesterday (1st) in Sululta, the Ethiopians had their WXC Trials on what appears to be a tough course.

    w10K - Gidey 35:22

World 10,000m champion Letesenbet Gidey and 2021 Diamond League champion Berihu Aregawi won the hotly contested senior races

Crazy that Berega didn't make the top 6.

Absolutely dominating performance by Gidey. Hard to see her not stretching her streak of XC medals to 4 champs in a row in Bathurst this February

I wonder what went wrong with Barega. He seemed to be in such fine shape early last year. He won the world indoor 3000m title and the ultra-tough Ethiopian 10k trials in 26.44mins.....then he just fizzled out. Hoping he bounces back well soon enough.

The Boston Marathon has just announced their women's elite field and it's crazy strong. 5 women with sub-2:18 PBs, including Amane Beriso and Lonah Salpeter. World Champions Gotyom Gebreslase and Ednah Kiplagat are also in the field, along with Mary Ngugi and Ababel Yeshanah, both of whom podiumed last year. Notable Americans announced are Sara Hall and Emma Bates, and the surprise NYC champ from Kenya, Sharon Lokedi is also part of the field. Obviously we won't know until other marathons announce their fields, but Boston might be the strongest spring marathon this year ahead of Tokyo and London!

Forget the marathon...you deserve a gold medal just for spelling all those names correctly!

BTW, did anybody else notice that one of the entries in the Houston half marathon is...Tirunesh Dibaba?
                Cheers,

'Results' in the broad sense...Femke Bol, Lieke Klaver & Evelyn Saalberg have all set hang clean PBs and flying 30m PBs in RSA recently. Let's see how that translates to running...

Edit: well I have just seen Klaver & Bol doing some 100's in training and both were faster than Kielbasinska, who on paper is much the faster over 100m (11.22 PB) (Klaver clearly ahead the whole distance, with Bol overtaking Kielbasinka at around 80-90m)

Bit of a shock; I thought she'd retired, but apparently she had a baby and caught Covid. She might be going for the Dibaba family record of 65:18 set by her sister Genzebe in Valencia 2020. Side note: what a shock it would be if Genzebe ends up with a faster marathon PB by the end of her career than Tirunesh, seeing as that she's only 9 or so seconds off

I saw that clip of the sprint. It was surprising that Klaver had such a margin. But I have a feeling Kielbasinka at her age doesn't treat a trial like that as urgently as the other two.

Saalberg seemed particularly happy with the personal best in the flying start, and Klaver thrilled with the weight lifting result.

I saw this yesterday. Verification that Bol with switch to 14 steps, while conceding she doesn't know how it will work out:

I gather it was an actual training session of 4x100ms, as opposed to a 100m time trial. However, from what I understand, Kielbasinka has had some minor injury or illness, so is behind where she wants to be and is still playing catch-up. However, in many training sessions this winter, and in particular the hill training, Kielbasinska has often been at the back. I can't work out whether injury related or less than max effort....sometimes she comes across as not trying as hard. 😯

EDIT: she was at the back again in the endurance session today!

Marileidy Paulino ran 1:22.84 over 600m this week, which is something like the 5th fastest ever. I know the Cuban approach is specific, but I wonder whether she has plans to run an 800m in future...

Anna Hall said on Instagram that she plans to run more 400mhs this season and will try 14 steps as well.

                              .
To clarify now I have more info, it was a training test, but fully auto timed. A Dominican journalist told me she plans to run the 800m after Paris 2024. 😲
