In Day 1 of the Georgia state champs (8 classes in 4 locations), Brunswick sr Riyon Rankin takes down the 20yo Dothel Edwards HJ state meet record -- and claims the national lead at the same time -- with a 7-3.75 in Class 6A. His old PR was 7-2. http://milesplit.live/meets/552223/events/2/results/F/M

Have to give a shout out to Refugio's Ernest Campbell (a junior), who just ran 10.22 (w2.0) in the UIL 2A state meet 100 and set a division record.
Refugio has a strong track and field history, but was almost destroyed in Hurricane Harvey in 2017. Enrollment is just over 200.

Today is the CIF southern section meet at Moorpark High - home of the "magic strip of 100 meters". This is where Rodrick Pleasant ran his 10.14 last year, and he's back today after a mostly quiet spring. Seems to be coming to form. Conditions look to be good, won't know about the wind until I get there.
Sadie Engelhart is the other big name in the meet, but this meet tends to have as much depth as any sectional meet in the country. Like '22, Sadie is running the 8 and 16 in the post-season, as well as anchoring Ventura's 4x4.
Last year, internet access was pretty pathetic, so I may not be able to post as things happen. We shall see.

After running 8:41.50 for 3200m last week in a fast, deep invitational 3200 in mid-Michigan (Shepherd), Grand Rapids Ottawa Hills sr Benne Anderson went for a sub-4 mile last night in his Ottawa-Kent Gold conference meet, according to Jeff Hollobaugh's reports on his Michtrack.org twitter (https://twitter.com/michtrack). It was a 1600m race, but a special finish line was set up just beyond for a full mile, he said. Anderson crossed 1600 in 4:01.60 (# 2 in state history behind Grant Fisher), then 4:03.04 for the mile.

Meanwhile, in Georgia 7A state meet this afternoon, Westlake soph Sidi Njie blasts a HSL 45.46, knocking more than a half-second off his PR. I think only Tyrese Cooper (45.38 in '17) has run faster among 10th-graders.
