  • Some big girls distance results from the Loucks Games in NY this weekend. Cornwall NY sr Karrie Baloga smashed the HSR for the girls 2k steeple today with a 6:22.85, beating the 6:24.32 that fellow Empire State standout Angelina Napoleon set last year as a junior. The Colorado recruit had run 6:28.72 earlier this spring and her many other great creds including winning the recent Penn 3k in 9:20.75 and the Champs Sports (former Foot Locker) XC national title last fall. She was also 5th at USATF U20 XC this past winter and made the World team where she finished 13th.

Sheridan Wheeler from Saratoga was 2nd at 6:27.80 (# 4 all-time). Interestingly, Napoleon ran in this meet, too, but not the steeple. She was 2nd in the 800 yesterday at 2:06.95 and won the mile today at 4:46.38.

      • Well, no internet connectivity whatsoever at the CIF-SS meet today. But the reality is that this meet has evolved into a case of waiting patiently for the few nuggets.

Biggest news was Rodrick Pleasant 10.09w/+3.3 and 20.53/+1.7. In a separate division, Jordan Washington (Long Beach Jordan) runs a legal 10.24/+1.6

Sadie Engelhardt beat national leader Mackenzie Brown in a tactical affair 2:04.48-2:09.27. One would have thought the tactical race would have favored Brown, but Engelhardt went past her in the stretch fairly easily.

A few other national-class marks in a meet that used to be filled with national leaders:

Serra girls run 45.68 in the 4x1

        Davis Davis-Lyric (yes that's his name) 13.87/+1.0

Aujane Luckey of LB Wilson 53.23

Xai Ricks of LB Poly 46.57

        Washington 20.76w/+2.4

        Anthony Flowers (S Torrance) 20.95/+1.1

Wilson 4x4 3:43.82 - have to check but I think this is the fastest time in California in several years

Wilson 3:14.77 / Poly 3:15.42, in a race I thought Poly would pull out with Ricks on the anchor

Field events? I couldn't find much of interest.

April Fontenette (Notre Dame), 162-8 DT

What this meet is still known for is its depth. Some of the marks that did not advance to net week's sectional meet:

        47.26 girls 4x1

        41.99 boys 4x1

4:57.06 missed by 0.01 in the girls 16 - ALWAYS run through the tape

10.60 - and if there were a "B" race next week, 10.69 wouldn't have made that one

        9:15.36

3:53.54. (although I suspect they'll get in if Engelhardt's Ventura team drops the event)

Next Saturday, again back at Moorpark, is the CIF-SS Masters, where top 6 (at least) will move on to State. I haven't missed this meet since 1974.

                    This is amazing.
But how does one qualify for a state meet with only one previous dalliance at an event?
League to State only in CO?

Apparently qualifying for the state meet is done solely by performance.

                        • Gatlin Bair, a junior and winner of the Boys 100m at the Texas Relays, ran 10.15(1.1w) and 20.41(1.7w) in the prelims at the Idaho State meet.
                          Finals are today.

                          • Colorado does have a last chance qualifier held after the league meets (two days after) and that is where Tavon Underwood ran his state qualifier.

His 800m state title was for section 4A, one of the five sections, and was the fastest winning time of the day.

Bair runs 10.15 AGAIN (1.4w), in the finals.
That's his 3rd 10.15 time in the past week. Very impressive!
Unfortunately, that might be the last race of his track career.
Supposedly he is going to forego his senior season, and has no plans to run anymore this year.
