        • Fantastic reporting by El Toro .
This is exactly the kind of in depth coverage that World Athletics should be providing throughout the year .
Please check out "basketball reference" who also provide comprehensive stats for soccer "fbref" and nhl , nfl etc .
Athletics really need a free to access - stats site of this quality and ease of use - to help promote the sport .
World Athletics needs to liaise with "basketball reference " and agree with a format that will work for athletics .

I thought I must have been a line out or meant to type "SB=x" to highlight a very close performance but it was just a complete @#^$% up. At least the other notes seem to be actual facts on rechecking. Here's the update.

                W100H Final -0.1

It''s only easy to use if you want to read exactly what they want to give you.

However, all the information I extracted to include the simplest sort of notes in my commentary, I had to do manually. In contrast, it appears that the site PaulThomas66 linked, is much more user friendly, allowing you to construct your own queries and explore the data in the way you want.

For example, the website has an example table for "What player scored the most points in the first 20 games of their career?"

                  https://stathead.com/tiny/pKWPT?&utm...it_on_stathead
                  • Hover over the headings, get the meaning of the abbreviation. IAAF does not do
                  • Click on the heading, sort the table. IAAF does not do
                  • Want to export? Options available, including bbcode table for easy posting here! IAAF does not do.
                  • Want to filter or delete prior to export so you only have stuff you want. Sure can! IAAF does not do.
Conclusion: Basketball stats are more engaging, stress free, more likely to be accurate and will generate more fan analysis of the sport than athletics stats.

Solution for stats people: dump this sport and follow basketball!

For the record, Sports Reference covers baseball, basketball, gridiron football, hockey, and association football. They used to also cover Olympic sports, with data provided by our very own bambam1729, et al., but that site closed in 2020, and the information formerly contained therein is now available on Olympedia.

                    • Things that I learnt over the weekend about IAAF data that shit me no end.

What does "Score" mean in profiles.

I though this was the results score except in relation to the World Rankings section where it's relevant but I noticed that "Score" can mean Performance Score (Results Score + Placing Score), which is the carefully defined term in the Ranking rules. Where "Results Score" appears it is Results Score as defined.

Why create a specific term then not use it in either the table description or the column heading? I would point out that the Top 10 appears at the bottom of every tab in profile, not just the World Rankings tab, so it's even less obvious. Here's what they use where a score appears:

                      Toplists = Results Score
All-time Personal Top 10 = Performance Score (Results Score + Placing Score), sorted in order of Score not times.
                      Personal Bests = Results Score
                      Seasons Bests = Results Score
Results = Performance Score (Results Score + Placing Score)

I hadn't noticed this because most AUS athletes don't have placing points. But Catriona Bisset's profile was so obvious, even a thicko like me finally twigged to it. Edited Version:

                      Code:
                      1:58.09 B 1197 ARNR
                      1:59.46 A 1195 ARNR
                      1:58.32 B 1192
                      1:58.42 GW 1191
                      1:58.54 GW 1188
                      1:59.83 A 1188
                      1:58.78 A 1184
                      2:00.10 A 1184
                      2:00.16 A 1183
                      1:59.12 B 1178
                      The case of Emily Britton.

I notice that when different performances have the same score, the Top 10 order does not have a secondary sort on performance, resulting in this in Britton's profile. I'm assuming it must be date order but who knows for sure.

                      Code:
                      13.31 -0.3 5 MAR 2023 1109
                      13.30 -0.1 02 APR 2023 1109
Even the World Bank is more interested in my thoughts about the usability and potential improvements on their datasite. Have a play with some of the data sets and look at all the choices you have of dealing with the data.

DataBank is an analysis and visualisation tool that contains collections of time series data on a variety of topics where you can create your own queries, generate tables, charts and maps and easily save, embed and share them

If's way way better than the out-of-date stats that they had until just a couple of years ago.

I'm thankful it's here. And hopeful it will be improved further in the future.

Compared to other 'individual' Olympic sports such as swimming, it's light-years ahead. Can almost guarantee a swimming world record set a month back won't even be on FINA's lists yet.

                            • The Stawell Gift seems to be turning into week 2 of Nationals with many leading runners accepted for this weekend. Let's hope they are all still in shape.

That list includes Eddie Nketia who has been rewarded for his fine running recently with the gift of scratch! I think we are still at only 6 winners off scratch in 140 editions but maybe Eddie can make it 7 out of 141.

One interesting potential winner is Chad Perris from the ACT, a T13 athlete due to his albinism, running off a relatively long 7.5m. I think he might be in that sweet zone to do well and it will be interesting to see how he goes.

Despite turning 31 later this year, Perris has improved his times since moving to Matt Beckenham's squad in the last year. He ran 2 x 10.65 PBs at the ACT Champs earlier this year with +1.5 & +1.6 winds and has run every race under 11s this season, compared to all races over 11s last domestic season!

The backmarkers less than 4m + select others:

                              MEN 120m Gift

                              Eddie Nketia (NZL) scratch
                              Jake Doran 0.5m
                              Anas Abu Ganaba 0.5m

Dhruv Rodrigues Chico (2019 Stawell Gift winner) 0.75m
Jacob Despard (2018 Stawell Gift winner) 1.25m
                              Matthew Rizzo (10.38 +0.7 heat, 10.34 +0.5 PB in 2020 ACT champs) 3.75m

                              • Like the men the Women's Gift is a who's who of national class athletes, although it looks like none will be able to win off their handicaps.

Bree Masters is the scratch runner, making it unlikely that she will be able to improve on her 3rd in 2019, despite now being a much faster athlete on synthetic. I will say though that the spread in marks seems harsh for some runners who are not in her class.

Carla Bull, last year's winner off 6.0m has had her leash shortened considerably to just 2.0m. That's pretty tight for somebody with only a 12.31 +0.4 PB, although she did set a 200m PB this year of 23.57 0.0. I don't think the extra 20m on grass will tip the balance against Masters let alone those on more generous marks.

Mia Gross has received an unfortunate 0.25m, probably due to excess weight given to her 11.39 +1.0 / 23.72 +0.1 PBs in one weekend in January last year. Unfortunately, this year she has only got an 11.78 -0.1 SB set in the Heat of Nationals, which also seemed to be her opener! She then had disaster of 13.72 in the Semi but I'm not sure what happened there. Maybe the handicapper thought she was running dead all season?

There's also a couple of unexpected non-specialist runners on longer (but not long enough) handicaps.

Brooke Buschkuehl, 7.13m NR in LJ, is off 4.0m and has a PB of 12.01 +0.8 from way back in 2015! However, she did sneak in a 12.02 0.0 in December last year, so she's in her best form but I can't see 4.0 being enough. Then again, who knows with a LJer - Naa Anang, anyone?

Tori West, fresh from a 5909 silver in Heptathlon at Nationals has 6.0m which I think is a bit harsh for somebody with only a 12.25 +0.6 PB from a couple of years ago and has never run under 24 over 200.

W120m Gift backmarkers under 4.0 + select others

Bree Masters (3rd in the 2019 Women’s Gift) scratch
                                Mia Gross (11.78 -0.1 SB) 0.25m
                                Maddie Coates 1.5m
                                Hayley Reynolds 1.75m
Carla Bull (2022 Womens Gift winner off 6.0m) 2.0m
