WC Day 3 Evening Session - Matt Denny tribute post.

    MDT Final

    4. Matt Denny (b.1996) 68.24 PB/NR, was 68.20 Benn Harradine Townsville 10 MAY 2013. Highest AUS placing in a WC MDT, was Harradine in 5th with 64.77 in 2011.

    Series: 66.39 - X - X - 68.24 - X - 65.92

This is by far the furthest throw by an Oceania athlete in a stadium, noting that the 70.39 AR by Alex ROSE (SAM) was at Millican Field this year in windy Oklahoma where "field" means exactly what it says).

For a more accurate comparison of throwing ability, Rose has never beaten Denny in the last two CWG and three WC, with Rose finishing 12th in the final here with 61.69, the 3rd OCE athlete behind 10th place Connor Bell (NZL) 63.23.

    More notes on Denny's performance:

    - furthest throw in a WC for 4th
    - only thrower to set a NR in 4th at WC
    - 2nd thrower to set PB in 4th at WC after Dmitriy Shevchenko (RUS) 67.57, 2001.
    - would have got WC Bronze in every previous WC
    - would have got WC Silver in every previous WC except 2001 (69.40 Alekna), 2003 (69.01 Fazekas), 2005 (68.57 Kanter), 2022 (69.27 Alekna Jnr)
    - would have got WC Gold in 1983, 1991, 1993, 2015 & 2019
    - 3rd furthest throw ever for 4th place after:
68.61 Gerd Kanter (EST) Shanghai 23 May 2010
68.40 Gejza Valent (CZE) San José 25 May 1985
68.24 Matthew Denny (AUS) Budapest 21 Aug 2023

Denny also holds furthest throw ever for 6th place at 66.47 at the 22 WC

Table of WC 4th places in order of distance:

    Year Athlete Distance Record
    2023 Matt Denny (AUS) 68.24 PB/NR
2001 Dmitriy Shevchenko (RUS) 67.57 PB
    1999 Virgilijus Alekna (LTU) 67.53
    2022 Daniel Ståhl (SWE) 67.10
    2019 Alin Firfirică (ROM) 66.46
    2009 Virgilijus Alekna (LTU) 66.36
    2003 Lars Riedel (GER) 66.28
    1997 Vladimir Dubrovshchik (BLR) 66.12
    1987 Rolf Danneberg (FRG) 65.96

Baden's marks back 6 months ago are WC-worthy but has he shown anything since? No.

Starc perhaps not as deserving on paper, but he gets the job done.

His positioning could do with some work (that’s probably just lack of experience), but he’s got quite a kick.

Are we sure he’s Australian? 😁
