Decathletes come in all shapes and sizes (WR holder Hingson 6'7/220 to 9000 pointer Warner 6'/180) and I agree 400H would be a good indicator of skill and fitness amd possibly potential. Back in the 8000 point days coaches often looked to convert hurdlers/vaulters. In the 9000 point era I think hardest thing to develop is arm speed/javelin ability. The inability to get a good javelin score seems to be a litmus test, often the dividing line between good and great for both heptathletes and decathletes (let's hope it's something Anna Hall can develop and Garland can improve and become consistent in, I'm not sure I want Sulek to change/improve : )

    • KJT opened her season the weekend in windy Loughborough. She ran 13.73 (- 1.0) in the 100mh; 13.13 in the SP and then a 400m relay leg in 52.6 (leg 2).

She wasn't happy with her hurdles, but it was an ok time considering it was a rust-buster and on a not-very-fast track into the wind. I expect a 13.4 in Gotzis. She was happy with her SP, which is actually her 4th best outdoor SP ever (5th best in & out).

She put a vomit emoji after the relay split - I guess that said it all LOL. But a 52.6 split was very decent.

        • First time I've seen Annie Kunz' name in a long time. Any insider information on her health? (Don't care if she's in form, I'd just be happy to see her healthy with a chance to recover that great form from '21.)

I'd like to set an over/under bet on women vs men approaching/going over 7000/9000 at Gotzis Historically, only 4 men have ever score 9000+ and only 4 women hav scored 7000+ Would you bet more on the women right now or the men?

Outsider here. She entered the Mt. SAC Relays heptathlon, but dropped out after the long jump. She seems to be healthy, but working her way back to pre-injury form. A comparison of her personal and season bests:

                • Thanks, David. The hurdles and the shot suggest she may well be in that "healthy-but-still-finding-form" stage.

I'll avoid trying to overthink why she's doing so much better in some events than others so far in '23.

Good thinking. She's had three or fewer competitions in each discipline: three hurdles, two high jumps, three shot puts, one 200, three long jumps, one javelin throw, zero 800s.

By the way, that's her in the green leggings in this photo.

But her jumps look decidedly affected.
Bougard and K Wms are in a similar situation.
The only one who seems auto-Q-able is indeed Hall.

Worth noting/reminding, when looking at this sum of PBs, that she belongs to a rare (unique ?) category of athletes with an Hep/Dec record superior to the sum of their individual events records.
6699 vs 6703, as she recorded PB or near best efforts in all of the events en route to an Heptathlon record, with a windy not-official PB 100H.

Hall already has the auto-Q. But for the rest of the americans it does indeed look like a scramble.

Zazsa, very interesting observation. While it's not unusual for a junior, or young collegiate multievent to "go wild" in a multi and exceed the sum of their previous PR's, it is rare at a high level (I'd say over 6500, 8500) for someone to do that, and even rarer for what AK did in 2021 at the age of 28. Hoping she comes back to that level or better. It's might take a pretty high score to make the USA WC heptathlon team. Anyone want to speculate how high?

I don't have the wherewithal to figure it out, but I'm wondering what the best "PR 100+ % of " 6500/8500 multi-eventer scores ever has been? AK scored 5 points over her previous PR totals. I believe Kyle Garland, when he scored 8720 in Fayetteville, had previous PR's that totaled about 8550....a 170 point "jump." (I also believe Garland had two 8500+ decathlons in a row, both in which he was 100%+ over the sum of his pre-meet PRs... amazing progress at a very high level at such a young age).

                              • Simple projections for the Hypomeeting Götzis decathlon, based on summing scores for season-best performances. If the decathlete has not yet established a season best in a discipline, then I used his season-best performance from the previous year, and so on. Corrections are welcome.

As always, the primary purpose of these projections is to enhance the fan experience by providing some insight into the actual leaders, who may or may not top the leaderboard early in the competition.
