Lots of heptathletes had promise at 400H (Glynis Nunn who beat JJK in LA was another) but I'm not sure any of them took the event too seriously.

Debbie Flintoff-King who won 400H Gold in Seoul started off her career as a heptathlete. There might be others.

      • Dec turning into a battle, if AH has a decent LJ the Hep turning into a coronation...

With all the talk about AH and the 400IH (she was 5th on the US list in 2922) she is now the USA's 2nd best high jumper.

Again thanks David for incredible updates all day! So if I'm reading the charts right, something like a 6.6, 44m, 2:03 will make Hall the No 2 heptathlete of all-time behind JJK ? Will this also make her the highest scoring heptathlete ever with the 'new rules' (now 24 years old) javelin?

Probably. Also can't be too many heptathletes in history at a 6700+ (even 6500) standard who can improve by about 300 points in one comp. 800 points in two years is pretty unbelievable too.

You're very welcome. I need a nap, but the LA Grand Prix field events begin soon, so no rest for the sleepy.

4172 plus 6.60 (21-8), 44.35 (145-6), and 2:03 would add up to 7033, one more than Carolina Kluft's best. For what it's worth, yes, this would give her the highest score with the new javelin.

And, as I said last year, a definite threat to break the WR in Paris '24!

Always a pet peeve of mine, no record adjustments seem to be made for the reduced distances in the multis. On the men's side Trey Hardee should be in the all-time top 10 passing Daley Thompson's old rules PR. Of course for what it's worth (I'd say 50+/- points) on the women's side- until some gets over, let's say 7200, it really doesn't matter. JJK put the record in the Stratosphere...

As much as I'd love to see that, I think it will take AH a little longer to mature and develop into a consistent thrower in the 15.5+ 50+ range that she'll need to be to challenge JJK... It would be an amazing thing to do at a "home meet" LA 28 Olympics to win gold and break JJK's record at age 27

Thing is, we don't really know how much of a difference, if any, the "new" jav made. I had a couple of pretty decent guys who threw farther with the new men's jav than they did with the old model.

As someone who threw both and was around a lot of throwers at the time, I feel there was a big difference in the men's open javelin, and a smaller but significant difference for multieventers. Harder to say for women as the long "old jave" throws happened in the limited
PEDs testing era (like the womens SP and DT) and the best "new" throws have been this century.

Statistically, there clearly was an advantage for both men and women with the old rules, and that advantage diminishes, particularly in the women's multis, as the length of throws goes down. A 6-6800 heptathlete with a weaker 40-45 meter jave and not great technique probably would just foul a lot more with the old rules, but a thrower like Thiam, with a 59m PR, would probably score 50+/- points with the old rules jave and technique in my opinion.

I just think 11th ranked Trey Hardee's score is better than Daley Thompson's... at the same time if someone came within 10 points of JJK's 'old rules' record and was given it (deservedly) as a new WR it would be very Roger Maris-like.

She jumped 6.51 on second attempt without even touching the board. She looks capable of going 6.80 if she gets things right.

Sułek saved herself with 6.29 after two fouls, but TBH none of her jumps looked very good today. The NR looks out of reach now, but she should still be ok for second place.
