  • Best Men's 400 Splits

This was only a few minutes of elemental research, but I think these are all the sub-43.6 splits ever (I'm sure someone will llet me know right quick if I missed any!). There are 25 times by 17 different guys. Michael Johnson has 5, Quincy Watts 3. (Note: there are two versions of the '93 WC splits floating about; this is the ATFS version; in hte ohter, Johnson is at 42.94, Reynolds at 42.23):

42.91 Michael Johnson (US) ’93 WC
43.00 Quincy Watts (US) ’92 OG
43.1+ Maurice Peoples (US) ’73 NCAA
    Antonio Pettigrew (US) ’97 WC
43.2(A) Ron Freeman (US) ’68 OG
    Pettigrew ’98 Goodwill
    Johnson ’98 Goodwill
    Jeremy Wariner (US) ’06 Texas
43.36 Butch Reynolds (US) ’93 WC
    43.4 Watts ’91 WC
43.41 Steve Lewis (US) ’92 OG
43.42 Chris Brown (Bahamas) ’05 WC
    43.49 Johnson ’99 WC
    Darrold Williamson (US) ’05 NCAA
    Wariner ’05 WC
43.5 Larry Black (US) ’72 Penn
    Julius Sang (Kenya) ’72 OG
    Roddie Haley (US) ’86 Penn
    Johnson ’88 Drake
    Johnson ’90 NCAA
    Tyree Washington (US) ’98 Goodwill
43.51 Davian Clarke (Jamaica) ’97 WC
43.53 Calvin Harrison (US) ’00 OG
43.57 Mark Richardson (GB) ’97 WC
    43.59 Watts ’93 WC

Trivia question: what's the significance of the Roddy Haley mark?

Fastest not on a 4x400? Guessing it may have been a DMR leg.

Note that the Watts 43.00 is a second-leg mark. Wariner's 43.2 at Texas doesn't even gain him that distinction. This is a tough list to crack!

I didnt realize this thread was here I would not have started a history thread... at any rate and needless to say if you have read the other thread... Sang stands out with Peoples a close second .

Not sure where that time comes from; there was no reliable auto-splitting of the first two legs in Athens; T&FN and the ATFS both go with 43.6.

Didn't Tirlea run 47.9 last leg in Athens? That's what it said on the Athens 2004 website but that no longer exists and I can't find proof of that.

The Tîrlea split as originally released was plain wrong. Later investigation proved it to be a 49.95.

Add 47.84 by Tatana Kocembova in 1984! Interesting to note that even with flying start, nobody ran faster than Koch's 47.60...

                              Thanks.

I had a feeling there was some mistake with her time.
