  • Basket of "I wonder why" questions...

I've imagined this thread to throw a florilège of questions we may ask about little but may be interesting T&F subjects, inside.
    For example:
I wonder why there aren't any world-class Canadien male throwers.
Women throwers from this country are however brilliant nowadays.

Why are there hardly no US woman HJers in the top 100 performances or performers in approx. the last 40 years? America seems to be top dog with sprints and jumps on both male and female but...?

Vashti Cunningham, Chaunte Lowe, and Brigitta Barrett would beg to differ. But outside of those three, in terms of consistently jumping high, yeah. 6' 4" is just not world-class internationally, and that's where many max out.

Ms. Cunningham is chopped pate de foie gras ?
        # 4 all-time USA. Ms. Barrett a decade ago, even higher.

          Chaunté Lowe 2.03 (6-8), 2.04 (6-8¼), and 2.05 (6-8¾) in 2010
          Brigetta Barrett 2.03 in 2012 and 2.04 in 2013

I'll let others more familiar with the event answer however, there's enough medalists within the last 10-12 years to wonder why the HJ question is being asked.

Yeah, I edited my post when looking more closely. Still they are rare on the list.

                Dylan Armstrong was.
                Ethan Katzberg is emerging.

The cut-off for the top 100 performers is 1.98 and the US has 9 - 3 of which are in the 80s and 2 in the 90s. The cut-off for the top 100 performances is 2.03 and the US has 7 performances by 3 people. The best being 10 years ago.

I wonder why Thomas Schoënlebe is still the European 400m recordholder almost 36 years later with his 44"33 performance at the WC in 1987.

Esp. with KW on the scene. That thing is stubborn as hell. I think Thomas did some type of voodoo magic for his record and no one is going to beat it unless they undo the spell.

Oceania also needs their 400m record erased. Darren Clark's 44.35 - 1988. All other Area Records are below 44. Come on Europe and Oceania (which means basically AUS and NZL which is mostly Europeans anyway - ha!).

Which leads me too - I wonder why are there no NZL athletes on the WA list for 400m performers with 45.50 as the cut-off? Come on guys!

                              I'm wondering two things:
                              1) What does Proofs n the Puddin's apparently contradictory post mean? "The cut-off for the top 100 performers is 1.98 and the US has 9 - 3 of which are in the 80s and 2 in the 90s. The cut-off for the top 100 performances is 2.03 and the US has 7 performances by 3 people. The best being 10 years ago."

2)And why is USA so anemic in both men's and women's HJ performance?
