If you look at her center of gravity (usually around the hips) and compare it to Felicien's (with feet firmly on the ground), you can see that there's about 2ft difference, maybe 2.5ft. Nothing more than 3ft, though.

Still, a great picture and a mark of Devers' athleticism.

8/9 SI. Different picture than on the BBC site although it might be all part of the same jump. Looks like over 4 feet to me.

Great picture...and yes one of her ritual moves before the race. I'm surprised TV directors haven't figued that out. Gail is like a caged tiger before the race ready to eat the guy with the chair, pacing, jumping, stretching, and yet TV, for the last ten years, hasn't figured that out. They keep trying to take the most overused shot in sports: the facial close-up, while she's thundering around before getting into the blocks. Very amateurish.

I agree totally with you. It is a great picture of one terrific athlete. She never ceases to amaze me.

on page 78-79 of this weeks Sports Illustrated is a picture of Gail Devers jumping about 6' in the air while walking back to the start of a hurdles race at Paris. It is an unbelieveable photo showing the athletic ability of this woman. To me it is one of those you look at and say "My God". You gotta see it.
