  • AOY?

I know it’s still early, but who are the front runners for AOY? Also my apologies if there was already a thread on this subject

    My picks:
women - Kipyegon (double gold, triple WR, undefeated so far and likely to stay that way) and Bol (2 golds, 1 WIR, undefeated so far and likely to stay that way). Richardson and Jackson also likely to get nominations and I could see one of them winning off the backs of name recognition and being sprinters.
men - Lyles (triple gold, lots of fast times, likely to stay undefeated in primary event), Ingebritson (gold and silver, dominated the 1500 circuit, dominant 2 mile WB), and Crouser (gold, WR).

    Kipyegon and Crouser.

The WC changed nothing except Jing no longer has standing..

      Agreed.

On the men's side, Lyles, Warholm, Mondo, and JI are in the battle for the following spots, even with Mondo's & JI's one loss.
On the women's side, it's more muddled, with Bol the likeliest runner-up.

Crouser and Jackson for POYs (thus far).

4:07.6 is the POY by far on the women's side.

RC is a great choice but how is JI's Gold and WB + silver not in standing with RC's Gold and WR?

Absolutely not lol. Kipyegon and Bol’s mile and 400i records were far more shocking and impressive.

Well said . . . I completely blanked out on anything pre-WC. Thank you.

                    3:49 > 4:07

The women's mile record is basically in line with her 1500m WR. 1500m is an actual event at championships, so 3:49 takes the cake for me.

100% agree. Crouser's had one of the greatest years ever for a thrower or anyone else. Then 2nd best throw in history (2nd to his '23 WR) after 20 days of serious blood clot issues, pain, limited training. If he doesn't "shut down" for health reasons WR a possibility in Eugene next month. Has 9 of top 10 marks now on absolute list... oh yeah undefeated.... sorry Lyles- he ran 3+ tenths slower than WR to win. His best 23 time in 200, if coverted to shot rankings, is 1'6" short of Crouser's throws this year. Crouser not just AOY he's also ahead of Mondo for AOD after 4 seasons. Side note: Crouser did all this with no super shoes, latest Mondo track, etc. Same metal ball and concrete ring as Parry O'Brien... plus he did it without the 80's 'enhancements' of some of the former record holders. I'm such a fan-boy....

Things can still change (Mondo or sb else WR; final DL mtgs…) but Crouser may already be impossible to beat. Then it’s a close call between Lyles, Warholm, Mondo, and maybe Ingebrigtsen. Only Warholm is undefeated (Lyles in 200, yes) and has arguably been the most dominant, yet has had fewest races. The rest of the season will determine the order of 2-5, with Holloway one hot time away from joining the debate.

Kipyegon is an even more certain choice in women’s side (and we could still see attempts at 3k or 800m). Jackson, Bol, and Richardson seem like the next three as field eventers did not shine as brightly this year (though a hot late-season mark by Mahukcikh, Moon, Rojas may yet change this). Racewalker Perez will also be a contender.

DET59’s AOD is an interesting topic if even more premature. The list above on men’s side for 2023 AOY largely matches the AOD to-date candidate list (Crouser Mondo Warholm Lyles Ingebrigtsen Holloway … though at least Cheptegei and El Bakkali would also deserve consideration).
After Paris 2024 we can begin to debate this topic more seriously, with 2/3 of the OG behind us.

The World Athletics rankings are Kipyegon, Bol, Jackson and Crouser, Duplantis, Lyles.

BTW, Bol is not undefeated this year. She lost an off event, the 200 Dutch final to Tasa Jiya.

I still think Jakob deserves high ranking and extraordinary credit for winning the 5000 again despite clearly not anywhere near his best. I particularly enjoyed that because of how it will play at another forum where the 5000 guys have been an obsession all year, with insistence they would trounce Jakob this time

The big AOD "if" is will Ryan Compete through LA '28 and retire "on top" at age 35.... If he does it will be a pretty amazing 12 year/4 Olympics/6 WC run that will be hard to top (unless you're Mondo).
