sorry, no more excuses for poor crowds in Eugene

maybe because interest is pretty low in the US and they wanted to fill up Sunday with "big" events.

For me this is the best looking athletics stadium in the world. However, it is a rather small stadium with a capacity of less than 13 000.

I have no problem agreeing to disagree, but in my opinion the crowd was simply not fine and it was rather visible for the TV-audience.....

This is the DL-final. The fields were awesome. Richardsson Vs Jackson. Lyles Vs Coleman. Warholm Vs Benjamin. Ingebrigtsen Vs the clock, which turned out to actually be Ingebrigtsen Vs Nuguse... The GOAT Kipyegon in the 1500.

The amount of empty seats was IMO just shocking....

This is a stadium with a capacity of less than 13 000. It is far from a large stadium. This is the DL final. The fields were amazing. To have as many seats empty as was the case today is very very bad for the sport. There are no two ways about this. You are entitled to think whatever you want, but I can assure you that I am far from the only one who thinks that this was a very bad look for the TV-audience.

I AM here; I have attended every one of the past 44 editions of the Prefontaine Classic . I carefully scanned the stadium several times and I was disappointed in the failure to fill the place. My best estimate is that the west side was never more than 75% occupied and the east side not more than 50%. That would total about 7,800. I would not believe an attendance figure exceeding 9,000 if it purports to be actual people in seats.

The stadium crowd at the originally announced start time of 11:00 a.m. was quite weak, with many people not arriving until 30-60 minutes later.

Then there was the schedule change that had 2 field events begin 10 minutes early. With more than a year to plan this meet, it’s bush league to be making last minute changes.

IMO, DL finals should be held in Berlin or Paris or Zurich with most knowledgeable and enthusiastic fans. People are watching College football on Saturday afternoons in September in Oregon.

Berlin in many ways sounds nice. I think ISTAF is one of the best non-DL meetings, however the Olympiastadion is rather big. It has a capacity of almost 75 000. I am afraid that having the DL-final there could easily be another far from good look.

I would much prefer Zurich with the smaller Letzigrund stadium.

I like PreClassic, it is always one of the best meets of the year, but I think the DL-final needs to be somewhere were the organizers are able to fill the stadium.

                        a media release

                        <<
We had 12,364 ticketed spectators on day one (Saturday, September 16, 2023) of the 2023 Prefontaine Classic, serving as this year’s Wanda Diamond League Final. Please note that this number only represents the number of ticketed spectators and does not include a count of accredited personnel. Therefore, it is not an overall attendance figure of the venue.>>

Sorry if I am slow, but do they by ticketed spectators mean spectators who used a ticket to enter the stadium?

If true, that number would fill the place to 99% of listed capacity. I’d like to know if those extra 4,000 or so “ticketed spectators” were all in the restrooms or at the food trucks and concession stand, or maybe they represent tickets sold but not butts in the seats.

After reading that laughable figure, I can no longer believe anything from the Pre Classic organizers or TrackTown USA.
